Offered for sale is a complete 1973 Japanese first pressing of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, including the original obi and all inserts. Like the original UK issue, this pressing has a label with a blue triangle.
Original, day-of-release pressings had a price of ¥2000 printed on both the cover and obi. Text on the label reads “Mfd. by Toshiba Musical Industries, Ltd. in Japan.”. Later 1973 pressings had a ¥2200 price and early 1974 pressings had a ¥2200 price and “Mfd. by Toshiba-EMI Ltd. in Japan.” on the label.

This is the true first issue with the ¥2000 price printed on both the cover and obi.
This issue appears to have been pressed using UK stampers, as the original UK catalog number SHVL-804 is stamped in the dead wax.
This copy includes the following inserts:
- Blue poster of pyramids (different from U.S. issue)
- Red poster of band members (different from U.S. issue)
- 32 page booklet with band history, lyrics, photos and more (in both English and Japanese
- Graphic card (printed on both sides; contains same graphics as stickers in the U.S. issue)
- Original obi
The cover is VG++, with slight corner wear and a small dent in the middle of the back cover.
The obi is VG+ with slight foxing, but no tears. The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.
The booklet is VG++ with slight foxing.
The two posters are M , with no rips, tears, or holes. The card is M-.
The disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl. Clean disc!
While the disc is not dead-quiet, it does look as though it has only been played once or twice.
A nice copy of an album that is astonishingly difficult to find as a clean 1973 pressing, and the only first issue we’ve ever seen.
Background: The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars. Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.
While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.
Due to popularity with buyers, the album has been released in multiple limited editions around the world over the years, including several different colored vinyl pressings and as a picture disc.
In Japan, the album was issued multiple times with multiple variations, in 1973, 1974 (twice; stereo and quad), 1977, 1978 and 2016.
By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.
