Background: Due to collector interest in picture discs, which were then mostly promotional items, many record companies started issuing limited edition picture discs of popular albums in 1978.
The large-scale production of picture disc LPs was short-lived, as most buyers weren’t interested in paying nearly twice as much money for records that usually didn’t sound as good as the regular black vinyl pressings.
During this time, the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road, and Band on the Run by Paul McCartney & Wings were released as picture discs in both the U.S. and Japan.
The Japanese pressings are much harder to find than the American versions.
Released in December 1973, Band on the Run was the fifth solo album by Paul McCartney and the third album credited to Paul McCartney & Wings.
The album reached #1 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.
Band on the Run is generally considered to be Paul McCartney’s strongest solo effort. The album was also his most commercially successful, selling well and spawning two hit singles, the multi-part pop suite of the title track and the roaring rocker “Jet.” On these cuts and elsewhere, McCartney’s penchant for sophisticated, nuanced arrangements and irrepressibly catchy melodic hooks is up to the caliber he displayed in the Beatles, far surpassing the first two Wings releases, Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway.
