About this copy: This copy of Sound Magazine is an original 1971 Japanese pressing, complete with the foldover “cap” obi and the two page lyric insert, which had a color photo of the cast of the show on one side and a photo of David Cassidy on the other.

The cover is M- with trace corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The color insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ on side one, with a couple of faint scuffs and a few spindle marks on the labels.  Side two is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.

A nice copy of an album that’s rarely found complete.

Background:  Sound Magazine was the third Partridge Family album, released in August of 1971.  Their first three albums were all released in a 10 month span, and all three reached the American Top 10.

Sound Magazine was the last album by the “group,” which was largely David Cassidy with backing by L.A.’s famed Wrecking Crew, to reach the top 10.  Sales of the album were helped by the single “I Woke Up in Love This Morning,” which reached #13 on the American pop charts.

Allmusic.com gave Sound Magazine a 4 star review:

The Partridge Family Sound Magazine, the third long-player from the pre-fab and made-for-TV combo, was also the last to make it into the Top Ten. …Providing instrumental support for Cassidy and Jones were some of the most prolific pop and rock studio musicians of the era — many of whom had likewise worked on Monkees platters. Heavyweights such as Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Carlton (guitar), Joe Osborne (bass), and Larry Knechtel (keyboards) gave the vocalists a nonconfrontational and genteel sound to match their squeaky-clean persona. Also joining the proceedings were the cavity-invoking backing harmonies of the Love Generation, who had participated to some degree on every Partridge Family release. The single “I Woke Up in Love This Morning” reached the Top 20 survey, making it the highest-profile side on the album. Other notable fan favorites included are “Echo Valley 2-6809,” “Summer Days,” and “Love Is All That I Ever Needed,” the Cassidy co-composition concluding this effort.

The Partridge Family sold a lot of albums in the states, but they were also quite popular in Japan.  While their Japanese albums frequently turn up, they’re rarely found in complete condition, as Bell Records issued most of their albums with the “cap” style obi, which folded over the top of the cover, rather than a traditional obi, which would wrap around the cover completely.

As a result, most Japanese albums by the group are found with the obi missing.
