Background: Neil Diamond only recorded two studio albums for Bang! Records, though they were both terrific albums. After Diamond left Bang! for Universal City Records, the former label released four different compilation albums in order to capitalize on the artist’s later success.
Neil Diamond’s Greatest Hits, released in December, 1968, was the first of those compilations, and the album reached #100 on the Billboard album chart.
Early versions of the album contained the 45 version of “Solitary Man” in rechanneled (fake) stereo. Later versions of the LP contained a true stereo recording of a different version of the song.
