Description

Offered for sale is a copy of the German double album 2 Originals of the Mothers of Invention by the Mothers of Invention.

Note: This album repackages Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh in a unique gatefold cover.

About this copy: This copy of 2 Originals of the Mothers of Invention is a 1978 German pressing on the Reprise label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with a small (2 cm) spot at the top of the cover that is starting to split.  There’s no split, but there is a bit of wear there.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  There is a small inaudible mark on the third track of side four that appears to be a pressing defect.

A nice copy of a rare Mothers LP.

Background: Released mostly in Germany starting in 1973, the 2 Originals of… series was a set of double albums that repackaged earlier releases by then-prominent bands in rather unusual covers.

Some titles are more common than others, but all of them are interesting.  This one pairs Burnt Weeny Sandwich with Weasels Ripped My Flesh, the ninth and tenth albums by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

Burnt Weeny Sandwich was released in 1970 and reached #94 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Burnt Weeny Sandwich a 4 1/2 star review:

Burnt Weeny Sandwich is the first of two albums by the Mothers of Invention that Frank Zappa released in 1970, after he had disbanded the original lineup. While Weasels Ripped My Flesh focuses on complex material and improvised stage madness, this collection of studio and live recordings summarizes the leader’s various interests and influences at the time….Burnt Weeny Sandwich sounds like a set of outtakes from Uncle Meat, which already summarized to an extent the adventures of the early Mothers. It lacks some direction, but those allergic to the group’s grunts and free-form playing will prefer it to the wacky Weasels Ripped My Flesh.

Released later in 1970, Weasels Ripped My Flesh reached #189 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Weasels Ripped My Flesh a 4 1/2 star review:

A fascinating collection of mostly instrumental live and studio material recorded by the original Mothers of Invention, complete with horn section, from 1967-1969, Weasels Ripped My Flesh segues unpredictably between arty experimentation and traditional song structures. …Zappa blurs the normally sharp line between intellectual concept music and the visceral immediacy of rock and R&B. Zappa’s anything-goes approach and the distance between his extremes are what make Weasels Ripped My Flesh ultimately invigorating; they also even make the closing title track — a minute and a half of squalling feedback, followed by applause — perfectly logical in the album’s context.
