Offered for sale is a rare original Japanese red vinyl Apple Records pressing of Under the Jasmin Tree by the Modern Jazz Quartet, complete with the ultra-rare original obi.
About this record: This copy of Under the Jasmin Tree is an example of the first and only Japanese pressing, pressed on red vinyl and including the original obi.
The record is M-, aside from a faint inaudible mark through the first two tracks on side one. It likely has been played only once or twice. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
The cover is M-. The ultra-rare original obi is VG+, with a tiny 1/4″ tear at the bottom. The “hojyuhyo”, or reorder tag, is still attached. The album has no insert, but it likely never included one, as the information that would normally be included on the insert is printed on the back cover.
The original black paper inner sleeve is included.
An incredible copy of a Beatles-related item that’s quite hard to find, and the only copy we’ve ever seen anywhere to include an original obi.
Background: The Modern Jazz Quartet seemed like an odd fit for the Beatles’ Apple Records, but in the late 1960s, the group released two albums for the label – Under the Jasmin Tree, and Space. Both are rather hard to find, as neither album sold well in any country.
While most of the non-Beatles Apple LPs were issued in Japan, most are quite rare, and not all of them were issued on colored vinyl.
Under the Jasmin Tree was released in Japan in 1968, and as far as we know it was only available one time for a short print run. Copies were pressed on both the regular black as well as the red “Everclean” vinyl, which was formulated to minimize static electricity.
