Description
Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis, including the original obi and an alternate cover from all other issues of the album.
About this copy: This copy of Birth of the Cool is a 1967 Japanese pressing of an album that was originally released in this format in 1957.
The cover is VG+, with no wear, but with a name written at the top of the back cover. Other than this, the cover is exceptionally nice. The obi is VG + + with a couple of minor wrinkles on the back side. The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag), is still attached.
This LP was issued without an insert.
The black vinyl disc is M- and looks unplayed. Clean disc!
A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.
Background: Capitol Records released Birth of the Cool in 1957, but the recordings actually date from sessions Davis recorded in 1949 and 1950. The tracks were originally released as 78 RPM singles.
Allmusic.com gave Birth of the Cool a 5 star review:
So dubbed because these three sessions — two from early 1949, one from March 1950 — are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed, Birth of the Cool remains one of the defining, pivotal moments in jazz. This is where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful, big-band arrangements and a relaxed, subdued mood that made it all seem easy, even at its most intricate. After all, there’s a reason why this music was called cool; it has a hip, detached elegance, never getting too hot, even as the rhythms skip and jump.
