Description

Offered for sale is a copy of the 1976 UK 4 LP set Boxed, by Mike Oldfield, including the original 12 page booklet.

This album includes SQ quadraphonic remixes of Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, and Ommadawn, along with a fourth LP with excerpts of albums by other artists on which Oldfield played.

The album will play on stereo turntables, but the mixes are dramatically different from the original releases of these albums.

About this copy: This copy of Boxed is a 1976 pressing on the Virgin label.

The box is VG+ with light general wear.

The booklet is VG++ with a few minor wrinkles.  This pressing included four colored inner sleeves with Virgin logos.

The four discs are all M- and look unplayed, aside from a .5 cm inaudible mark at the very end of side one of Tubular Bells.

A nice copy of a rare (and very good) Mike Oldfield set.

Background: Released in 1976, Boxed offered dramatically different mixes of Mike Oldfield’s first three albums, along with a fourth LP called Collaborations and a 12 page booklet.

The album, not released in the U.S., reached #22 on the UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Boxed a 4 1/2 star review:

A curious four-LP set consisting of the original version of Ommadawn, a vastly remixed version of Hergest Ridge, a remixed/remodeled version of Tubular Bells, and a platter called Collaborations in which Oldfield’s bits on the recordings of others were excerpted, often with the result that sans context, the excerpts made little sense (certainly the case with Oldfield’s work alongside David Bedford). The altered Tubular Bells is most startling at the close — instead of the familiar “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” there’s a long, rambling bit involving Viv Stanshall, engineer Tom Newman and Oldfield, remotely miked, wandering around the Virgin Mansion, Stanshall drunkenly commenting on the various objects they encounter while Newman and Oldfield play the “Hornpipe.” The remixing of Hergest Ridge, drastic though it is (even the sleigh bells vanish), is rather less upsetting.
