Offered for sale is an original 1968 U.S. pressing of Things by HMS Bounty, featuring singer/guitarist Merrell Fankhauser.
About this copy: This copy of Things is an original U.S. pressing on the Shamley label.
The cover is VG, with moderate ring wear and two punch holes, but no split seams.
The record is M-, with just a couple of faint sleeve scuffs. There are no spindle marks, so the record has clearly only been played a couple of times.
A beautiful copy of what just might be our favorite LP of the 1960s. It’s also the only copy we’ve ever had for sale.
Background: Merrell Fankhauser has had a long career in surf, rock, and psych, recording a number of albums, but never achieving commercial success.
Things was his third LP, after the surf LP Wipe Out (by the Impacts) and the rare, privately pressed Fapardokly LP. While Things had national distribution, it didn’t have a hit single and sold poorly. The band broke up shortly thereafter and Fankhauser went on to form another band called Mu.
Fine, tuneful ’60s psychedelia with a pop edge, featuring Fankhauser’s first-rate songwriting and warm vocals. About half of the tunes are excellent, especially the country-rocker “Your Painted Lives,” and the folk-rock ballad “Ice Cube Island,” and “A Visit with Ashiya,” one of the best raga-rock songs ever cut.
