Description

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of Calendar Girl by Julie London.

About this copy: This copy of Calendar Girl is a 1956 U.S. mono pressing on the Liberty label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

Label variation is unknown; it may be an original maroon label pressing, a green label second pressing, or (less likely) a 1960 pressing on the black label.   This copy is two ounces heavier than the last 1960 pressing that we had, so it’s most likely a maroon or green label 1950s issue.

The thick plastic wrap is almost completely intact, with very tiny breaks at the corners.  There is trace wear there.  An original price sticker is attached to the wrap.

A beautiful copy of an album that is almost never found sealed.  Good record, too.

Background: Julie London is best remembered today as the actress who played nurse Dixie McCall in the 1970s TV show Emergency!  Prior to becoming a household staple on television, she was a recording artist who released some 30 albums for Liberty Records between 1955 and 1969.  She was a terrific singer with a sultry voice, and she enjoyed success recording with both small jazz combos and large orchestras.  Liberty Records rather shamelessly took advantage of the fact that she was attractive, packaging most of her albums in covers depicting cheesecake photos.

Calendar Girl, the third album by Julie London, was released in 1956 and was Julie’s only American album to feature a gatefold cover.  The album contained thirteen songs, each addressing a different month of the year, and the cover depicted a different photo of Julie for each month of the year, along with a large photo of her inside the cover.  Offered at a higher price than her other recordings, Calendar Girl didn’t sell particularly well, but is highly sought out by collectors today as much for the cover as for the recordings inside.

The album reached #18 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Calendar Girl a 4 star review:

Like Chet Baker, Julie London had an extremely limited vocal range but she did the most with what she had, possessing a special knack for torch songs that cast her in the role of a woman constantly being destroyed by love in general and by men in particular. The cover concept of Calendar Girl is carried over from the concept album, which features a narrative of romance lost and found for each month of the year before ending with one final tune called “The Thirteenth Month” (which is illustrated by that insert picture of London in bed). Since there aren’t quality standards for every month of the year, one of Calendar Girl’s pleasures can be found in the numbers written especially for the album, particularly those penned by Bobby Troup, London’s husband.
