Description

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of the live album Priest in the East by Judas Priest, including the original obi and the bonus Japan-only 7″ 4-track EP.

This is the same LP as the U.S. release Unleashed in the East, though the U.S. release did not include the bonus EP.

About this copy: This copy of Priest in the East is a  1979 pressing on the Epic label.  This is the first issue that does not list “The Ripper” as the fourth track on side one.

The cover is VG++ with slight corner and edge wear.  The obi is M-.

The lyric insert is VG+ with some discoloration from age.  The plain cardboard insert to hold the bonus 7″ is included.

The disc is VG+ with a few light scuffs and a number of spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a clean disc, but one that has been played fairly often.  It plays well with slight surface noise between tracks.

The bonus 7″ single is VG+ with a few light scuffs and a number of spindle marks on the labels.

A nice copy of an album that has become quite hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in 1979, Priest in the East (Released as Unleashed in the East outside of Japan) was the first live album by Judas Priest.

The album reached #10 on the UK charts and #70 in the U.S., where it was later certified Platinum.

In Japan, the album was titled Priest in the East and included a bonus 4-track EP containing the following songs:

  • Rock Forever
  • Delivering the Goods
  • Hell Bent for Leather
  • Starbreaker

Allmusic.com gave Priest in the East a 4 star review:

Judas Priest’s first official live recording has always been met with equal amounts of acclaim and controversy: acclaim from those who consider it an excellent summation of the metal legend’s 1970s output, and controversy from the critics and industry insiders who criticized what they believed to be a heavily overdubbed and studio-enhanced performance, mockingly naming it Unleashed in the Studio at times. Before delving deeper into this issue, let it be said that except for a few unfortunate omissions (“Hell Bent for Leather,” “Better by You, Better Than Me”) the track listing here is quite impressive. Along with powerful versions of such storming anthems as “Exciter” and “Running Wild,” the band delivers the definitive version of the prog metallic “Sinner,” and competent versions of their popular covers tunes, “Diamonds and Rust” and “The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown).”
