An ultra-rare, and possibly unique, yellow vinyl pressing of Merry Christmas by Johnny Mathis.

This item has been sold.

Offered for sale is an ultra rare, and possibly unique, yellow vinyl U.S. stereo pressing of Merry Christmas by Johnny Mathis.

About this copy: This copy of Merry Christmas is an original stereo U.S. pressing on the “six-eye” label that Columbia used until 1962, but unlike the millions of other copies, this unusual copy has been pressed on yellow vinyl.

We don’t know much else about it; there are no other known colored vinyl pressings of this (or any other) Johnny Mathis albums on Columbia, though there were some colored vinyl promotional singles.  This copy may literally be a one-of-a-kind pressing.

The album was likely pressed by a record company employee for their own use, rather than for distribution to radio or for sale in stores.  The record is a stock (non-promotional) copy and aside from the yellow vinyl, there are no indications on either the cover or the disc itself that the record is anything other than a standard pressing.

Matrix numbers are:

Side 1: XSM -44076-1BF (machine stamped)

Side 2: XSM-44077-1CF (machine stamped)

The cover is M- and retains most of the original shrink wrap.  One corner has been bent.

The record is VG++ and has a few very slight marks, likely from being removed from the original heavy paper sleeve (included).  The record clearly has had very little play, though it does play with a bit of noise.

A beautiful copy of a terrific album, and possibly the only colored vinyl copy of this album in existence.  It is certainly one of the world’s rarest Johnny Mathis LPs.

Background:  Merry Christmas was the sixth album by Johnny Mathis, originally released in monaural in October of 1958.  The stereo pressings were released the following year.   The album reached #3 on the Billboard albums chart and was certified gold in 1960.  To this day, it remains one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all time and the album has never gone out of print (though it has had at least one cover change.) gave Merry Christmas 4 1/2 stars:

Of the several Christmas LPs Johnny Mathis has recorded, this one gets the nod. With empathetic arrangements by Percy Faith, it’s impossible to say how many babies were born the following September after parents heard Johnny Mathis crooning “The Christmas Song.” Smo-o-o-oth !
