Description

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon, pressed on red vinyl and including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Plastic Ono Band is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Apple label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl and including the original obi, lyric insert, and custom inner sleeve.

The cover is VG++, with slight wear at the corners.  The obi is M- and has no wrinkles or tears, which is rare for this die-cut “medallion” obi style.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The custom inner sleeve is VG++ with a few minor wrinkles, but no splits.  The lyric insert is VG+, with moderate foxing, but no tears or writing.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ and close to M- with one or two very faint inaudible sleeve scuffs.  There is slight foxing on the labels.

A beautiful copy of an album that’s rarely found either complete or in this condition.

Background: Depending on how you’re counting, Plastic Ono Band is either John Lennon’s fifth solo album, or his first, as the four “solo” albums that preceded this one all included Yoko Ono and all but Live Peace in Toronto failed to include any actual music.

The deeply personal Plastic Ono Band didn’t include any hits, with the only single (“Mother”) peaking at #43 on the U.S. charts.

The album still sold well, reaching #6 in the U.S. and #8 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Plastic Ono Band a rare 5 star review:

The cliché about singer/songwriters is that they sing confessionals direct from their heart, but John Lennon exploded the myth behind that cliché, as well as many others, on his first official solo record, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. Inspired by his primal scream therapy with Dr. Arthur Janov, Lennon created a harrowing set of unflinchingly personal songs, laying out all of his fears and angers for everyone to hear. It was a revolutionary record — never before had a record been so explicitly introspective, and very few records made absolutely no concession to the audience’s expectations, daring the listeners to meet all the artist’s demands….Few albums are ever as harrowing, difficult, and rewarding as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.
