Description

Offered for sale is a copy of the double album Jimmy’s Happy/Jimmy’s Blue by Jimmy Clanton, with one red vinyl disc, one blue vinyl disc, the rare poster and nearly-always-missing fan club letter.

These two LPs were sold as individual albums (Ace LP 1007 and LP 1008) and as a double album (Ace DLP 100); the colored vinyl pressings were available only via mail through the Jimmy Clanton fan club and were not sold in stores.

About these copies: This copy of Jimmy’s Happy/Jimmy’s Blue is a 1960 U.S. mono pressing on the Ace label.  All copies are mono; there was no stereo issue.

The gatefold cover is VG++, with a couple of tiny corner dents and slight foxing on the inside.  The poster is still attached to the inside of the cover and is M-.

The rare fan club letter is M-; this letter thanks the buyer for purchasing the double album and tells them that they can get an autographed photo of Jimmy Clanton by sending 25¢ to the address noted in the letter.

The red vinyl Jimmy’s Happy disc is M-, and may be unplayed.
The blue vinyl Jimmy’s Blue disc is VG++ on side one with a couple of faint marks.  Side two is M-.

A beautiful copy of a rare double album and the only copy we’ve ever seen that included the letter.

They’re pretty good records, too.

Background: Jimmy Clanton was a pop singer and songwriter from the small town of Cut Off, Louisiana.  He had 7 Top 40 hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including “Just a Dream” and “Venus in Blue Jeans.”

He recorded for Jackson, Mississippi-based Ace Records and his records weren’t heavily promoted, as the label’s more popular artists performed R&B and Jimmy was more of the white teen idol type.

You can listen to “You’re Just in Love” here:

These two albums from 1960 were briefly available on colored vinyl, with Jimmy’s Happy pressed on red vinyl and Jimmy’s Blue pressed on blue vinyl.

The colored vinyl copies of these two albums were only available by mail order to members of the Jimmy Clanton fan club, and all of the copies sent to stores were pressed on black vinyl. Reportedly, only a few hundred copies of each were pressed on colored vinyl, and we know of no other colored vinyl albums on the Ace Label.

These two albums were also issued as a two record set (DLP 100), and again, some copies of that set were pressed with red and blue discs.  As both the individual albums and the double album were pressed at the same time, the labels for the individual albums have both their own catalog number (LP 1007 and LP 1008) and the catalog number of the double album (DLP 100.)  The colored vinyl pressings appear to be more common in the two record set than they are with the individual albums.
