Offered for sale is a still sealed mono limited edition Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR) pressing of Axis: Bold as Love by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, issued by Analogue Productions in a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies.
The mono pressing was far more limited than the stereo version, of which 5000 copies were pressed.
About this copy: This copy of Axis: Bold as Love is a relatively low-numbered #374 of 1500 copies in a limited edition mono UHQR release. The box is still sealed; the record is presumably new and unplayed.
The disc is pressed on 200 gram Clarity vinyl.
The wrap is fully intact, and there are no rips, tears, or holes. There are four stickers affixed to the wrap – one with the serial number (#374), one indicating that the record was mastered from analog master tapes, one indicating that the record was pressed by Quality Record Pressings and one touting the Analogue Productions quality guarantee.
A nice, low-numbered copy of a terrific classic LP that is certain to rise in value quickly.
Background: Axis: Bold as Love, released in December, 1967, was the second album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The album reached #2 on the UK charts and #5 in the U.S., where it has since been certified 5 times platinum by the RIAA.
The LP was originally released in both stereo and mono in both the U.S. and the UK, and the mono mix is distinctly different from the stereo version. As mono records were being phased out at the time of the album’s initial release, the original mono pressings are quite rare and have sold for as much as $3000 on the collector market.
In recent years, the album has been reissued in mono several times to meet collector demand.
In 2019, Axis: Bold as Love became the first title issued in the UHQR format by Analogue Productions. This format had been proprietary to JVC in Japan and in the early 1980s had been used to press less than a dozen titles that are all highly regarded today.
The rights to the UHQR format have been acquired by Analogue Productions. Here’s what they have to say about this issue:
Analogue Productions presents its first UHQR title — Jimi Hendrix’s 1967 masterpiece, Axis: Bold As Love, in both stereo and mono versions. This UHQR is newly remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes. Each UHQR will be pressed at Acoustic Sounds’ industry-leading pressing plant Quality Record Pressings (QRP) using hand-selected Clarity Vinyl on a manual Finebilt press with attention paid to every single detail of every single record. The 200-gram records will feature the same flat profile that helped to make the original UHQR™ so desirable. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer’s stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. Clarity Vinyl allows for the purest possible pressing and the most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product.
Jimi Hendrix’s second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself. Wisely retaining manager Chas Chandler to produce the album and Eddie Kramer as engineer, Hendrix stretched further musically than the first album, but even more so as a songwriter.
It’s our favorite Hendrix album, and it’s also the best-sounding of the three albums he released in his lifetime.
