Description

Offered for sale is a very rare experimental picture disc of All I Can Do by Dolly Parton, featuring a photo of the Jefferson Starship on the disc!  This disc may be unique.

While the disc features the same photo used on the Jefferson Starship Gold picture disc on both sides, the disc plays Dolly Parton’s All I Can Do in its entirety.  There is no Jefferson Starship music on this LP.

This LP came from the collection of a longtime employee of RCA Records.

About this copy: This copy of All I Can Do is a U.S. picture disc, pressed in 1978 by RCA for in-house experimental purposes.  While the photo shows the Jefferson Starship, the stamper numbers are APL1-1665A/B, which indicates the stampers for the Dolly Parton All I Can Do album.

The disc is VG+, with a couple of inaudible marks. This LP was issued without a cover, though we’ll provide a plain white one.

A beautiful copy of an ultra-rare Dolly Parton LP, and possibly the only copy in existence.

Background: This copy of All I Can Do was an experimental picture disc prepared in about 1978 as a test for an intended, but ultimately unreleased picture disc of that LP.

A few copies of the All I Can Do picture disc were pressed that featured the correct artwork for that album; we’ve seen three for sale over the years.  This one is likely an earlier test, done before the correct artwork was available.  The pressing plant employees simply used artwork that was readily available to test the manufacturing process.

The artwork that was readily available on that particular day was the artwork for the picture disc for Gold by the Jefferson Starship.

Ultimately, the Dolly Parton album was never released as a picture disc, either for public sale or as a promotional item.  The few test pressings that were manufactured, either with or without the correct artwork, are the only copies that exist.

There were likely fewer than 10 copies pressed in total.

While we’ve seen three copies of the picture disc with the correct All I Can Do artwork over the years, this is the only copy of this hybrid Dolly Parton/Jefferson Starship picture disc we’ve ever seen.

All I Can Do is the 17th album by Dolly Parton and the album was released in August, 1976.  The album peaked at #3 on the U.S. Country Albums chart.

Allmusic.com gave All I Can Do a 4 star review:

Released in 1976, All I Can Do was Dolly Parton’s last album produced by longtime mentor and frequent duet partner Porter Wagoner, though this time out Parton co-produced, and one can sense Dolly was straining slightly at the bit on these sessions. … A few years on, Parton’s career and public persona would go through a lot of changes, but All I Can Do serves as a reminder that her commitment to country music was always real, and that she was a first-class talent before she became a multimedia star.
