Description
Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the 2 LP set Sex Machine, by James Brown, including the original obi.
About this copy: This copy of Sex Machine is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Polydor label.
The cover is VG+ with slight edge wear and trace ring wear. The obi is VG with a crease across the center and a couple of small tears.
The discs are M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl. Clean discs!
A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.
Background: Sex Machine was originally released in 1970 on the King label, and subsequent issues were on Polydor. The album purported to be a live recording, but the first LP consists of studio tracks with overdubbed crowd noises to simulate a live recording.
The album reached #29 on the U.S. album chart.
It’s worth nothing that the title track, which runs more than 10 minutes, is a different recording from the version of the song that was released as a single.
The second disc is a live recording. The album is regarded as one of the best and most influential soul albums in history.
Allmusic.com gave Sex Machine a 4 1/2 star review:
This live outing from Brown’s seminal 1970 J.B.’s lineup features Bootsy Collins, Clyde Stubblefield, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bobby Byrd, and many more. While it’s a cut below Love Power Peace in documenting this lineup live, Brown and his band still smoke, tearing into extended versions of funk classics like “Sex Machine” (nearly 11 minutes), “Brother Rapp,” “Give It Up or Turnit a Loose,” and “Mother Popcorn,” plus a healthy quotient of earlier soul material sprinkled in between.
