Allmusic.com gave Dreamboat Annie a 4 1/2 star review:

Greatly influenced by Zep, Heart did its part to help open doors for ladies of loudness with the excellent Dreamboat Annie. Aggressive yet melodic rockers like “Sing Child,” “White Lightning & Wine,” and the rock radio staples “Magic Man” and “Crazy on You” led to the tag “the female Led Zeppelin.” And in fact, Robert Plant did have a strong influence on Ann Wilson. But those numbers and caressing, folk-ish ballads like “How Deep It Goes” and the title song also make it clear that the Nancy and Ann Wilson had their own identity and vision early on.

Due to disagreements with their first record company, Mushroom Records, Heart left the label during the recording of their second album, Magazine, to record for CBS.  Mushroom was left with little in the way of material from the band to generate sales from older product.  Then the picture disc fad came along in 1978, and the label got the idea of issuing Magazine as a numbered, limited edition picture disc.

It became the best-selling picture disc ever, selling more than 100,000 copies in the U.S. and another 30,000 in Canada.  The following year, Mushroom decided to do the same thing with Heart’s debut LP, Dreamboat Annie.

The picture disc editions of Magazine are quite common, but the picture discs of Dreamboat Annie were pressed in far fewer numbers, since the public had started to become a bit weary of the picture disc phenomenon by the time the album was issued in that format.  As a result, the picture discs of Dreamboat Annie are relatively scarce, and there are probably 20 copies of the Magazine picture disc for every picture disc of Dreamboat Annie.
