Description

Offered for sale is a complete copy of the Japan-only 2 LP compilation album Battle Of Eric Burdon And The Animals & The Mothers Of Invention by the Animals and the Mothers of Invention, packed in a metal film can.

This is the rarest title in Nippon Grammophon’s ten-album “Rock & Rock Battle” series issued in Japan in 1970 and 1971.

About this copy: This copy of Battle Of Eric Burdon And The Animals & The Mothers Of Invention is a 1970 pressing on the MGM label.

This set is complete, and includes 2 LPs (one by each artist,) a 12 page lyric/liner note booklet, two pieces of foam rubber, and the very rare (and nearly always missing) ¥3000 price tag.  This series was issued without an obi, and the price tag was used in its place.

The can is VG+, with slight wear at the edges and some discoloration on the inside of the can. There is no rust.

The booklet is VG+ with a few minor wrinkles, but no tears, holes, or writing.  The two pieces of foam rubber are slightly discolored, but otherwise undamaged.

The rare price tag is VG++, with moderate foxing on the back.

The two discs are M-, with a number of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl aside from a very faint hairline through the last minor or so of the last track on side one. (“River Deep, Mountain High” by the Animals.

A terrific copy of an ultra-rare Frank Zappa/Mothers item, and the only copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: Japan is known for producing high quality records, along with albums that feature unique compilations and covers.  One rarely encounters anything as strange as Nippon Grammophon’s “Rock & Rock Battle” series, which was issued in 1970/1971.

These two record sets consisted of one record each by two different artists, packaged in a large metal film canister such as what might be used for a 35mm theatrical film.   There are ten different titles in the series, but the can featuring The Animals and the Mothers of Invention is far and away the rarest title in the series.

Both discs are compilations:

Tracks are:

Disc 1 – The Animals

  • When I Was Young
  • San Franciscan Nights
  • Your’re On My Mind
  • Winds Of Chicago
  • River Deep Mountain High
  • To Love Somebody
  • Ring Of Fire
  • Coloured Rain

Disc 2 – The Mothers of Invention

  • Trouble Comin’ Every Day
  • Who Are The Brain Police?
  • You’re Probably Wondering Why I’m Here
  • Wowie Zowie
  • Motherly Love
  • Hungry Freaks Daddy
  • Help, I’m A Rock
  • The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet
