Offered for sale is a scarce Japanese Mastersound audiophile pressing of Time by Electric Light Orchestra, complete with original obi.
About this copy: This copy of Time was a limited edition release in the short-lived CBS Mastersound series in Japan.
The cover still has most of the original shrink wrap and is M-, with trace wear at the corners of the mouth of the cover.
The original obi, thick inner sleeve, custom inner sleeve, and Mastersound insert are included. The custom insert has a couple of splits on the edges.
The disc is M- and appears to be virtually unplayed.
A nice copy of a terrific LP.
Background: In the United States, Columbia Records had a short-lived (1980-1983) audiophile series they caled Mastersound that presented popular titles pressed on high quality vinyl in deluxe packaging. This series was also issued in Japan, with titles pressed on heavier, high quality vinyl and offered in deluxe packaging.
While nearly all of the titles in the CBS Mastersound series in the United States were half speed mastered, most of the Japanese titles in the Mastersound series were digitally remastered, with only a few (we know of five) titles mastered at half speed.
Like their American counterparts, the Japanese Mastersound LPs are rather scarce today as they did not sell particularly well, due to their higher price.
Released in 1981, Time was the ninth studio album by ELO.
The album reached #1 in the UK and peaked at #16 in the U.S.
Time takes its cues more from such bands as the Alan Parsons Project and Wings than from Jeff Lynne’s fascination with Pepper-era Beatles. … Time proves to be competent ELO but not great ELO.
