Description

Offered for sale is an original 1969Japanese pressing of The Soft Parade by the Doors, including the rare original “envelope” obi.

This album was part of the short-lived World Rock Series of albums that packaged the album in a die-cut envelope.  This series only included eleven albums (including titles by the Mothers and the MC5) before the record company thought better of it and went back to using the regular obi style.

About this copy: This copy of The Soft Parade is a 1969 pressing on the Elektra label.

The “envelope” obi is VG-, with a couple of neatly repaired minor tears and a repaired 3″ split at the bottom right hand corner.  These envelopes were poorly designed and the album fit very tightly inside, making it very easy to tear them.  This one is complete, however, with no missing parts, which is usually how they’re found.

The cover is VG+ with slight edge and corner wear.

This album was not issued with a standard obi or a lyric insert.  The lyrics are printed on the inside (!) of the envelope and the Japanese liner notes are printed on the back.

The disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of an album that is nearly impossible to find complete.

Background: Released in 1969, The Soft Parade was the fourth album by the Doors.

The album reached #6 on the U.s. charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Soft Parade a 3 1/2 star review:

The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren’t entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like “Do It” and “Runnin’ Blue,” a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit. On the other hand, about half the record is quite good, especially the huge hit “Touch Me” (their most successful integration of orchestration), the vicious hard rock riffs of “Wild Child,” the overlooked “Shaman’s Blues,” and the lengthy title track, a multi-part suite that was one of the band’s best attempts to mix rock with poetry.
