Description

Offered for sale is an original US pressing of Concerto for Group and Orchestra by Deep Purple, on the Tetragrammaton label.

Tetragrammaton Records went out of business shortly after the release of this 1969 LP; this was the last title issued by that label. It was immediately reissued on Warner Brothers Records, and early Warner Brothers. Pressings have the Tetragrammaton catalog number etched in the dead wax.

About this copy: This copy of Concerto for Group and Orchestra is a 1969 US pressing on the Tetragrammaton label.

The cover is VG + +, with trace edge wear. The disc is VG +, with a few minor sleep scuffs, but no significant marks. It’s a clean disc that has had relatively little play.

A nice copy of a very rare Deep Purple LP, and the first copy we’ve had for sale in decades.

Background: released in 1969, Concerto for Group and Orchestra was the fourth album by Deep Purple.

The album reached number 162 on the US album chart, but did not chart in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Concerto for Group and Orchestra a three star review:

Back in 1970, it seemed as though any British group that could was starting to utilize classical elements in their work — for some, like ELP, that meant quoting from the classics as often and loudly as possible, while for others, like Yes, it meant incorporating classical structures into their albums and songs. Deep Purple, at the behest of keyboardman Jon Lord, fell briefly into the camp of this offshoot of early progressive rock with the Concerto for Group and Orchestra. For most fans, the album represented the nadir of the classic (i.e., post-Rod Evans) group: minutes of orchestral meandering lead into some perfectly good hard rock jamming by the band, but the trip is almost not worth the effort. Ritchie Blackmore sounds great and plays his heart out, and you can tell this band is going to go somewhere, just by virtue of the energy that they put into these extended pieces.
