About this copy: This copy of Brubeck a La Mode is a 1960 U.S. mono pressing on the Fantasy label.
The cover is VG++ with trace corner wear and slight discoloration from age on the back cover.
The red vinyl disc is VG+ on side one with a couple of light marks, and VG++ (and close to M-) on side two with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs. It’s a clean disc that’s had little play.
A nice copy of a scarce Dave Brubeck LP.
Background: Released in 1960, Brubeck a La Mode was one of three albums that members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet made with clarinetist Bill Smith instead of alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.
All compositions on this album were by Bill Smith, as were the liner notes.
Allmusic.com gave Brubeck a La Mode this review:
One of Brubeck’s three recordings of the 1959-61 period that featured clarinetist Bill Smith in the place of altoist Paul Desmond with the Quartet, this one finds Smith contributing ten originals that use various modes and unusual scales. The music generally swings and there are some fine solos but none of the individual pieces are all that memorable.
