Description

Offered for sale is a still sealed early U.S. pressing of the double album Chicago Transit Authority by Chicago.

This is the 1970 second issue that has the title on the spine as Chicago Transit Authority I.

About this copy: This copy of Chicago Transit Authority is an early U.S. pressing on the Columbia label, likely pressed in 1970 or a little later..

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.  The discs likely have the second label with “Columbia” repeated around the perimeter of the label and not the “360° Sound” label used on the first issue (see photo.)

The wrap is fully intact except at the corners, where there are slight breaks.  There is slight wear at the lower left hand corner.

There is a hype sticker on the wrap that says “Chicago 2 RECORD SET SPECIAL LOW PRICE” and lists the song titles.

This copy does not have the second hype sticker promoting the singles “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? or “Beginnings”  that were used on later pressings.

Those two singles were released in October, 1970 and June, 1971, so this pressing is likely from early 1970.

A nice copy of a terrific (and great-sounding) album and one that’s quite hard to find either sealed or with a clean cover.

Background: Released in 1969, Chicago Transit Authority was the first album by Chicago.

The album reached #17 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Chicago Transit Authority a 4 star review:

Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority (1969). Even fewer can claim to have enough material to fill out a double-disc affair. … In April of 1969, the dozen sides of Chicago Transit Authority unleashed a formidable and ultimately American musical experience. This included an unheralded synthesis of electric guitar wailin’ rock & roll to more deeply rooted jazz influences and arrangements. This approach economized the finest of what the band had to offer — actually two highly stylized units that coexisted with remarkable singularity.
