Offered for sale is a U.S. mono copy of the 1963 surf classic, Pipeline, by the Chantays.
This copy has been signed on the back cover by all five original band members, one of whom is now deceased.
About this copy: This copy of Pipeline is a 1963 U.S. pressing on the Dot label. This is the second issue after the original pressing on the small Downey label.
The cover is VG, with edge and corner wear. The disc is VG++ on side one, with a couple of minor sleeve scuffs. Side two is VG and close to VG+, with a few light marks. It’s a fairly clean disc that should play well.
The back cover has been signed by all five original members over their photos:
- Bob Spickard – guitar – added “Best Wishes Surfs Up!!
- Bob Welch – drummer (not the Fleetwood Mac guitarist)
- Brian Carman – guitar (died 2015)
- Warren Waters – bass guitar
- Rob Marshall – piano
Included are two of Bob Spickard’s business cards, a letter from a collector (dated 2001) asking for the autographs, a certificate of authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA) and a letter of authenticity from Rockaway Records in Los Angeles.
A nice example of a classic surf LP.
Background: The Chantays had a brief recording career, releasing just six singles and two albums in the 1960s, but their 1963 instrumental, “Pipeline”, reached #4 on the U.S. charts and has been covered by dozens, if not hundreds of artists. There aren’t a lot of songs that qualify as surf classics, but “Pipeline” definitely qualifies.
The Pipeline album was originally released on Downey Records, a small label in the Los Angeles area. When sales picked up, arrangements were made to have the album distributed nationally by Dot Records.
