Description
Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. pressing of Captain Beyond, the self-titled debut LP by Captain Beyond, including the original 3D lenticular cover.
About this copy: This copy of Captain Beyond is an original, still sealed 1972 U.S. pressing on the Capricorn label.
As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.
The wrap is mostly intact; there are tiny breaks at the two lower corners, and a small 1 1/2 inch (4 cm) tear near the lower left hand corner. At that spot, there is a punch hole in the cover.
A nice copy of a terrific LP and the first sealed copy we’ve had for sale in several years.
Background: Captain Beyond was an early “supergroup,” consisting of bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt (from Iron Butterfly), singer Rod Evans (from Deep Purple) and drummer Bobby Caldwell (from Johnny Winter’s band.)
The album was an odd mixture of spacey, progressive, hard rock, and it must have come as a surprise to the then-current members of Deep Purple, who had reportedly asked Evans to leave because they didn’t think he’d be an effective singer of the harder rock they wanted to perform.
The album was well received, but didn’t sell particularly well, and after the first album, drummer Bobby Caldwell departed. Their second album, Sufficiently Breathless, was a bit more mellow. After that, the band disbanded for a few years and both albums went out of print. They later regrouped (with a new singer) to produce one more album in 1977 that was pretty much ignored by everyone.
While Captain Beyond was released in a number of countries, only the American issue was released with the 3D cover, which was created by gluing a plastic lenticular image to the cover. This cover was only available for a short time; after that it was replaced by a printed image.
Over time, Captain Beyond has developed quite a cult following and it can be rather difficult to find nice playable copies of either of their first two albums.
Allmusic.com gave Captain Beyond a 4 1/2 star review:
Captain Beyond is a one-of-a-kind progressive album with rock, heavy metal, and jazz influences with a “space rock” lyrical bend. Formed by former members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans, vocals), Iron Butterfly (Rhino, lead guitar, and Lee Dorman, bass), and Johnny Winter (Bobby Caldwell, drums) Captain Beyond is an album that flows from riff to riff, drumbeat to drumbeat, often with various time signatures within the same song. …. Rod Evans has a strong rock voice, Rhino plays an enormous amount of hook-laden guitar lines, and Lee Dorman plays complex basslines (for example, at the end of “As the Moon Speaks-Return”) that lead to typically rhythmic, nimble Bobby Caldwell drumming.
