Background: Released in June, 1978,  Darkness on the Edge of Town is the fourth studio album by Bruce Springsteen.

The album reached #5 on the U.S. charts and #14 in the UK.

After the success of Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen waited three years for the follow-up LP due to legal problems with his management team.  The long-awaited follow-up, Darkness on the Edge of Town, has since gone triple platinum and saw “Prove It All Night” and “Badlands” released as singles.

To promote the album, Columbia Records released a limited-edition picture disc LP of the album, but released it only to radio stations as a promotional item, making it one of the harder to find Springsteen collectibles.  Production was reportedly limited to 1000 copies.

Allmusic.com gave Darkness on the Edge of Town a 4 1/2 star review:

Coming three years, and one extended court battle, after the commercial breakthrough of Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town was highly anticipated. Some attributed the album’s embattled tone to Springsteen’s legal troubles, but it carried on from Born to Run, in which Springsteen had first begun to view his colorful cast of characters as “losers.” On Darkness, he began to see them as the working class. …Darkness was no easy listen, and it served notice that Springsteen was already willing to risk his popularity for his principles. Indeed, Darkness was not as big a seller as Born to Run. And it presaged even starker efforts, such as Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad.
