Offered for sale is a sealed Canadian copy of the limited edition half speed mastered pressing of Bruce Springsteen’s 1975 LP, Born to Run, released in 1980.
We don’t need to go on about Born to Run at length; it’s the album that made Bruce Springsteen a superstar and Columbia made it one of the first titles in their half speed mastered Mastersound series in 1980.
While Columbia’s audiophile LPs of the early 1980s are fairly well known among collectors, it’s less well known that the label also released a few titles in this series in Canada. They are understandably harder to find than their U.S. counterparts, as the Canadian market for records is smaller than the American market and few of these titles were exported.
This particular pressing was one of the first titles released in Columbia Records’ short-lived (1980-1983) audiophile series, in which they released a number of then-new and vintage titles in high-quality, half speed mastered editions in order to compete with Mobile Fidelity and Nautilus. These records were mastered with both the tape deck and the cutting lathe running at half speed, which produces deeper bass and better imaging than standard pressings. In addition, these records, which sold for a substantial premium over the regular pressings of the album, were pressed on high quality virgin vinyl. Mobile Fidelity’s audiophile pressings are better known than those from Columbia, but Columbia’s half speed mastered pressings are, for the most part, exceptionally good ones, and this album is no exception.
About this record: The copy offered for sale is a still sealed Canadian pressing. The record is new and presumably unplayed. The cover wrap and sealing sticker are fully intact and there are no tears, rips holes or other marks. It’s as nice a copy of this album as you could hope to find.
