About this copy: This copy of Born to Run is 1980 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label, issued as part of Columbia’s short-lived Mastersound series.

The cover is M-. The generic Mastersound insert is missing.  The original plastic outer sleeve is included.

The disc on side one and VG++ on side two with a faint inaudible hairline mark through “Jungleland.”  There is slight pitting on the side two label; this may be a pressing defect.

A nice copy of a scarce Springsteen LP.

Background: Released in 1975, Born to Run was the third album by Bruce Springsteen.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. charts and #17 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Born to Run a 5 star review:

Bruce Springsteen’s make-or-break third album represented a sonic leap from his first two, which had been made for modest sums at a suburban studio; Born to Run was cut on a superstar budget, mostly at the Record Plant in New York. Springsteen’s backup band had changed, with his two virtuoso players, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Vini Lopez, replaced by the professional but less flashy Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg. The result was a full, highly produced sound that contained elements of Phil Spector’s melodramatic work of the 1960s. Layers of guitar, layers of echo on the vocals, lots of keyboards, thunderous drums — Born to Run had a big sound, and Springsteen wrote big songs to match it. …If The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle was an accidental miracle, Born to Run was an intentional masterpiece. It declared its own greatness with songs and a sound that lived up to Springsteen’s promise, and though some thought it took itself too seriously, many found that exalting.

This particular pressing was one of the first titles released in Columbia Records’ short-lived (1980-1983) audiophile series, in which they released a number of then-new and vintage titles in high-quality, half speed mastered editions in order to compete with Mobile Fidelity and Nautilus. These records were mastered with both the tape deck and the cutting lathe running at half speed, which produces deeper bass and better imaging than standard pressings. In addition, these records, which sold for a substantial premium over the regular pressings of the album, were pressed on high quality virgin vinyl. Mobile Fidelity’s audiophile pressings are better known than those from Columbia, but Columbia’s half speed mastered pressings are, for the most part, exceptionally good ones, and this album is no exception.
