Description
Offered for sale is a copy of the very rare Japan-only double album Musical Autobiography, Vol. 2 by Brenda Lee, including the original obi.
The 2 LP set is a compilation of hits recorded between 1956-1966. This album is unusual in that it plays at 45 RPM.
About this copy: This copy of Musical Autobiography, Vol. 2 is an original 1966 Japanese pressing on the Decca label. While the discs and cover say “stereophonic,” a few of the tracks on the album are in rechanneled stereo.
The gatefold cover is VG++, with trace edge and corner wear. The obi is VG++, with slight foxing, but no wrinkles or tears.
This album was released without an insert, as the lyrics (in English and Japanese) are included in the 8 page lyric/photo booklet.
The two discs are M- on sides 1 and 3. Sides 2 and 4 are VG++, with a couple of faint marks. These discs have clearly only been played a couple of times.
A beautiful copy of a very rare Brenda Lee LP.
Background: Musical Autobiography, Vol. 2 is a very unusual LP. It’s not uncommon to find Japan-only compilation albums by English-speaking artists, as most Japanese buyers preferred to purchase albums containing the hits.
What’s unusual about Musical Autobiography, Vol. 2 is that the album plays at 45 RPM.
Equally unusual is that we’re unaware of a Musical Autobiography, Vol. 1.
It’s not unusual today to find limited edition audiophile pressings that are cut at 45 RPM, as the higher speed provides better sound quality during playback.
But these audiophile pressings are a relatively new thing; we rarely saw them before the mid-1990s, and those made prior to that were usually limited-edition direct-to-disc recordings.
We’ve never seen an album from the 1960s by a major artist on a major label that played at 45 RPM until we found this one.
As the last track on the LP is the 1966 hit “Coming on Strong,” this album was likely released in late 1966 or early 1967.
