Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. picture disc of Boston’s second LP, Don’t Look Back.
This pressing was, from the time of the original release, advertised as an item that was issued only for promotional use. It appears that some copies, such as this one. were exported to Europe and sold at retail. This copy has a sticker from the record company promoting it as a “USA Import.”
About this copy: This copy of Don’t Look Back is an original 1978 U.S. pressing on the Epic label.
As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.
The shrink wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears, or holes. There is a hype sticker attached to the wrap that says “IMPORT USA” and has both a CBS and Epic logo. This sticker appears to have been added by the record company in Europe. We acquired this copy from a European dealer.
A beautiful copy of a classic LP and the only export pressing we’ve ever seen.
Background: After Boston’s 1976 self-titled first album became the biggest-selling debut album in history, buyers were eager for the release of their second album, 1978’s Don’t Look Back. The album didn’t really need any promotional help in making sales, but Epic chose to send radio stations a copy of the album in picture disc form, anyway.
Picture discs make odd promotional items, as their sound quality isn’t good enough for airplay. In fact, this one says so right on the cover – “Not intended for normal play.”
About the time this album was released, Epic released the first album as a picture disc, but that one was a commercial release, and is much more common than this one, which was sent only to radio stations. We think this is the better looking of the two picture discs, and collectors seem to agree.
Released in August, 1978, Don’t Look Back reached #1 on the U.S. album charts and has sold more than seven million copies to date.
Boston’s many fans were upset that it took the band two years to follow up its monster debut. When it arrived, the sophomore effort DON’T LOOK BACK was a virtual rewrite of BOSTON. This didn’t stop the masses from snapping up the album, which ultimately racked up sales in the multi-platinum range.
