Description

Offered for sale is a limited edition U.S.  half speed mastered pressing of Boston, the debut LP by Boston.

About this copy:  This copy of Boston is a 1980 U.S. pressing on the Epic label.

The cover is VG++ with slight edge and corner wear.  The generic Mastersound insert is missing.

The disc is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a terrific album.

Background: Boston’s debut LP, the self-titled Boston, is one of the biggest selling debut albums in history, having sold some seventeen million copies to date.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. charts and #17 in Britain, and put three songs in the U.S. Top 40: “More Than a Feeling,” “Long Time,” and “Peace of Mind.”

Boston was one of the first albums released in Columbia’s Mastersound audiophile series, in which they released a number of then-new and vintage titles in high-quality, half speed mastered editions in order to compete with Mobile Fidelity and Nautilus. These records were mastered with both the tape deck and the cutting lathe running at half speed, which produces deeper bass and better imaging than standard pressings.

In addition, these records, which sold for a substantial premium over the regular pressings of the album, were pressed on high quality virgin vinyl. Mobile Fidelity’s audiophile pressings are better known than those from Columbia, but Columbia’s half speed mastered pressings are, for the most part, exceptionally good ones, and this album is no exception.

Boston was later released by Mobile Fidelity in the 1990s, but it’s generally agreed that the CBS Mastersound pressing is the better-sounding version of the album.

Allmusic.com gave Boston a 4 1/2 star review:

Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of disco and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every song on Boston’s debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz. …Boston is essential for any fan of classic rock, and the album marks the re-emergence of the genre in the 1970s.
