Description

Offered for sale is an original 1962 U.S. mono pressing of Waltz for Debby by the Bill Evans Trio.

About this copy: This copy of Waltz for Debby is an original mono 1962 “deep groove” LP on the blue Riverside label.

The cover is VG, with a bit of general wear, primarily at the edges and corners.  There’s a bit of writing and a sticker on the back cover.

The deep groove mono disc is tough to grade.  It’s better than VG, and close to VG+, with a few sleeve scuffs and a few tiny marks.  It’s been well cared for and plays well.

Mint copies of this legendary LP have sold for more than $2000.  This is a nice, playable copy at a fraction of the price.  As long as you’re not expecting a mint copy, you’ll be happy with this one.

Background: The Bill Evans Trio of the early 1960s is regarded as one of the most important groups in jazz history, though their time together was cut short by the untimely death of bassist Scott LaFaro in an auto accident. One of the trio’s last gigs was at the Village Vanguard in New York, and the recordings taken from those dates yielded two albums – Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby.

Waltz for Debby is one of those albums that managed to perfectly merge great performances with a great recording, and the album has long been a favorite of both jazz buffs and audiophiles. Original pressings are long out of print and sell for upwards of $1000, and they’re likely worth it.

Allmusic.com gave Waltz for Debby a 5 star review:

Recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1961, shortly before Scott LaFaro’s death, Waltz for Debby is the second album issued from that historic session, and the final one from that legendary trio that also contained drummer Paul Motian. While the Sunday at the Village Vanguard album focused on material where LaFaro soloed prominently, this is far more a portrait of the trio on those dates. …. Here Motian’s brushwork is delicate, flighty and elegant, and LaFaro controls the dynamic of the tune with his light as a feather pizzicato work and makes Evans’ deeply emotional statements swing effortlessly. Of the many recordings Evans issued, the two Vanguard dates and Explorations are the ultimate expressions of his legendary trio.
