Description

Offered for sale is an original Japanese white label promotional copy of Massachusetts by the Bee Gees, including the original obi.

This is the same album as Horizontal with a different title and cover.

About this copy: This copy of Massachusetts is a 1968 Japanese pressing on the Polydor label.

The gatefold cover is VG+ with slight edge wear.  The nearly-always-missing obi is VG++ with slight foxing on the back, but no tears.

This LP was issued without an insert.  The gatefold cover has a lyric booklet that replaces the insert.

The white label promo disc is VG+ with a couple of light scuffs.  There are one or two spindle marks on each side and light foxing on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a very rare Bee Gees LP.

Background: Released in 1968, Horizontal (titled Massachusetts in Japan) was the fourth album by the Bee Gees, but their second to get worldwide distribution.

The album reached #12 on the U.S. charts and #16 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Horizontal a 3 1/2 star review:

The group’s second album, cut late in 1967 amid their first major British success, is less focused than their first, but also presents a more majestic sound than its predecessor. The opening track, “World,” is a poignant, even somber yet gorgeous ballad filled with clever lyrics, and highlighted by a quavering Mellotron accompaniment, a very close grand piano sound (anticipating elements of the Odessa album), and twangy fuzz-tone guitar. …Side two of the original LP was more upbeat, opening with the group’s catchy chart-topping British hit, “Massachusetts,” followed by the cheerful “Harry Braff.” “The Earnest of Being George” and “The Change Is Made” are attempts at a harder rock sound, featuring heavy guitar on both and an attempt at bluesy feel on the latter, while the title track is a trippy psychedelic number that closes the album on an upbeat note.
