Background: With the Beatles was the second album by the Beatles, issued in the UK in November, 1963. An altered version of the album was released in the U.S. in January, 1964 as Meet the Beatles.
Oddly enough, the album was not released in Japan until May, 1966. The album was issued to commemorate the Beatles’ tour of Japan in June, 1966, where they played five concerts at the Budokan hall.
The Japanese version of the album had the same songs as the UK version, but the songs had a different running order. The gatefold cover and cover art were unique to the Japanese release.
The album was released in Japan in May, 1966 on the Odeon label and reissued in September, 1969 on the Apple label, with both pressings originally pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.
With the Beatles is a sequel of the highest order — one that betters the original by developing its own tone and adding depth. While it may share several similarities with its predecessor — there is an equal ratio of covers-to-originals, a familiar blend of girl group, Motown, R&B, pop, and rock, and a show tune that interrupts the flow of the album — With the Beatles is a better record that not only rocks harder, it’s considerably more sophisticated. .. Still, the heart of With the Beatles lies not in the covers, but the originals, where it was clear that, even at this early stage, the Beatles were rapidly maturing and changing, turning into expert craftsmen and musical innovators.
