Beatles – White Album ultra-rare gray/white vinyl 2 LP set

A rare prototype of the colored vinyl Beatles White Album, featuring one disc on gray marbled vinyl.

1 in stock

Offered for sale is a limited edition white vinyl pressing of the Beatles self-titled 1968 LP, The Beatles, also known as the White Album, complete with poster and four photo inserts.  Disc two is white vinyl, as sold in stores.  Disc one of the set is an experimental gray marbled vinyl, rather than the standard white vinyl that was used on the commercial release.

About this copy: This copy of The White Album is a hybrid set consisting of one white vinyl disc and one gray one.  These gray discs were not packaged as complete albums; they were simply individual test discs made for in-house use.  In this case, however, we are offering the gray marbled vinyl disc matched with a white vinyl second disc, cover and inserts to form a set so that you’ll have a complete album.

The copy of The White Album offered for sale is a limited edition pressing from 1978, pressed on the then-current maroon Capitol label, complete with cover, poster, and four 8″x10″ photos.

The first disc is an experimental disc, pressed on gray marbled vinyl.  The second disc is the standard white vinyl disc that was part of the regular limited edition that was sold in stores.

The cover, poster and four photo inserts are included and are in VG++ condition.  The white disc 2 is VG++, though it does have a number of spindle marks on the label.  The gray disc 1 is VG and has a number of small marks.

A beautiful copy of an extremely rare Beatles LP.

Background: In 1978, collectors were showing a lot of interest in both picture discs and colored vinyl records, so record companies worldwide issued a number of new and older titles in those formats to satisfy collector demand.

In the United States, Capitol Records pressed three different albums by the Beatles on colored vinyl – The Beatles 1962-1966 on red vinyl, The Beatles 1967-1970 on blue vinyl, and The Beatles, or The White Album on white vinyl.

All three pressings are collectible, though the White Album seems to be the one that attracts the most demand from collectors today.

When Capitol was preparing to release The Beatles 1962-1966 on red vinyl, The Beatles 1967-1970 on blue vinyl, and The Beatles, and The White Album on white vinyl, they also pressed a few test discs on other colors of vinyl.

In the case of The White Album, the first record (sides 1 and 2) was pressed on several different colors of vinyl for test purposes.  We are aware of copies of the whitealbum on gray marbled vinyl and pink and white marbled vinyl.   This was done with the first disc only; all known examples of the record containing sites 3 and 4 are on white vinyl, just like the final release that was sold in stores.

We don’t know how many were pressed, but over the years we’ve seen only three or four copies for sale in colors other than white.
