Description

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the U.S. LP The Original Greatest Hits by the Beatles.

Note: This 1964 LP was the first unauthorized album of Beatles music to reach stores in the U.S. and was deleted shortly after release due to legal threats from Capitol Records.  Despite the fact that the word “Beatles” does not appear on the cover or label, the recordings on this album are original recordings by the Beatles.

About this copy: This copy of The Original Greatest Hits is a 1964 U.S. mono pressing on the Greatest Records label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is largely intact, though there is a large tear near the top of the back cover and a 5″ (12 cm) split in the shrink wrap along the bottom edge.  We have secured these with tape to prevent further tearing.

There is some residue on the wrap where a price sticker was removed.

A nice copy of a very rare Beatles LP.

Background: During the height of Beatlemania in 1964, record companies were all scrambling to find something that they could release to cash in on the band’s popularity.

Many companies licensed older recordings, such as the Tony Sheridan “My Bonnie” and other similar tracks.

A previously unknown record company, Greatest Records, took a different approach.  They simply released an album of genuine Beatles recordings without the permission of Capitol Records.

They thought they could get away with it by not mentioning “Beatles” on the cover, thinking that the public could figure out what the record was despite the artist not being named.  This made the album appear very much like similar albums by Beatles cover bands that were then flooding the market.

Capitol Records did notice and likely threatened to sue and The Original Greatest Hits quickly disappeared from the market.

The address for the record company on the back cover is the same address used on the first issue of the later release The Savage Young Beatles, so this album is likely the work of the same people.
