Offered for sale is a limited edition yellow vinyl pressing of the double album Love Songs by the Beatles, issued in Canada in 1978.
About this copy: This cop of Love Songs is a 1978 Canadian pressing on the Capitol label.
The cover is VG, with wear at the edges, mostly on the spine, and a bit of wear on the front cover. It’s rare to find this title without a fair amount of cover wear.
The 28 page lyric book is M-. The two custom inner sleeves are included; they are M- with no splits.
The two yellow vinyl discs are M- and look like they might have been played once.
A nice copy of a scarce colored vinyl Beatles LP and the first copy we’ve had for sale in many years.
Background: Following the success of the 1976 double album Rock ‘n’ Roll Music, which reached #2 on the U.S. charts, Capitol Records released Love Songs the following year.
While the first album featured the band’s rockers, Love Songs featured ballads and…love songs.
The album didn’t fare as well as Rock ‘n’ Roll Music, however, reaching only #24 on the U.S. charts. It did eventually sell three million copies and was deleted in the late 1980s.
Capitol Records in the U.S. decided to release The Beatles (The White Album,) The Beatles 1962-1966, and The Beatles 1967-1970, on white, red, and blue vinyl, respectively in 1978.
Capitol Records of Canada also released those titles on the same colors of vinyl, but in addition they released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on gray marbled vinyl and Love Songs on yellow vinyl.
These two titles were issued that way only in Canada. While the Sgt. Pepper title was widely available as an import, far fewer copies of Love Songs were imported, likely due to the fact that it was a double album that would likely be fairly expensive for U.S. buyers.
Having charted high with a grab-bag double album of Beatle rockers, Rock and Roll Music in 1976, Capitol compiled what amounts to the former album’s flip side the following year, a two-LP collection of Beatle ballads. The 25-song set covers just about the entire heyday of the band, from their first single (“P.S. I Love You”) to their last (“The Long and Winding Road”). No doubt it’s a remarkable journey, indelible proof that John Lennon and Paul McCartney — and, with “Something,” George Harrison — wrote love songs that were built to last, transcending their era.
