Description

Offered for sale is a complete 1967 red vinyl Japanese pressing of Help! by the Beatles, including the original obi, lyric insert, and promotional postcards.

Note: This version of the album has the same songs as the UK version of the album.

About this copy: This copy of Help! is a 1967 pressing on the Odeon label of an album that was originally issued in 1965,  pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl and including the original obi, lyric insert, and nearly-always-missing promotional postcards.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with light foxing inside the gatefold cover. The lyric insert is is M- .  The original paper inner sleeve that advertised other Odeon albums is included.

Note: Unlike the 1965 Japanese pressing, this version did not include a bonus photo.

The obi is VG++ with no tears, but with a bit of foxing on the back.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

The red vinyl disc is M- and looks like it may have been played no more than one time.  Beautiful disc!

A nice copy of an album that’s very difficult to find complete and the only copy we’ve ever seen that included the postcards.

Background: Released in 1965, Help! was the fifth UK album release by the Beatles.    Released in different configurations in the UK and the U.S., both versions reached #1 on their respective album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Help! a 5 star review:

Considering that Help! functions as the Beatles’ fifth album and as the soundtrack to their second film — while filming, they continued to release non-LP singles on a regular basis — it’s not entirely surprising that it still has some of the weariness of Beatles for Sale. Again, they pad the album with covers, but the Bakersfield bounce of “Act Naturally” adds new flavor (along with an ideal showcase for Ringo’s amiable vocals) and “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” gives John an opportunity to flex his rock & roll muscle. George is writing again and if his two contributions don’t touch Lennon and McCartney’s originals, they hold their own against much of their British pop peers.

As with A Hard Day’s Night a year earlier, the 1965 album Help! had different configurations in the U.S. and elsewhere.  In the U.S., the album was a true soundtrack album, with seven Beatles songs and the rest filled in by orchestral instrumentation conducted by Ken Thorne.

In the UK, the album contained 14 tracks by the Beatles and had a different cover.

In Japan, the album was released in September, 1965, with a gatefold cover and it included a large photo of the group.  First pressings were issued on red vinyl, as were original pressings of most Beatles albums sold in Japan.

Help! was released in Japan three different times in the 1960s – in 1965 with a blue obi, in 1967 with a green obi with an Odeon Records logo, and in 1969 with a green obi with an Apple Reccords logo.
