Background: At the height of Beatlemania, record companies couldn’t get enough Beatles product out on the shelves to satisfy consumers. When Vee Jay records issued the interview-only album Hear the Beatles Tell All, Capitol issued their own documentary album as a two-record set, entitled The Beatles Story. This album featured interviews, press conference excerpts, narration about the history of the band, and brief snippets of some of their songs.
The album reached number seven on the US albums chart and was certified gold by the RIAA.
AllMusic.com gave the Beatles Story this review:
The strangest of all albums released during the Beatles’ lifetime, The Beatles Story appeared in November 1964, during the thick of Beatlemania. In fact, Beatlemania, not the Beatles, is the very topic of The Beatles Story, a tedious neo-documentary record that tells the tale of the Fab Four’s rise to power via a collection of musical snippets, interview excerpts, and scripted narrative. …It’s an artifact and it’s interesting because it captures some of the madness surrounding Beatlemania, but it’s not something to hear more than once.
