Description
Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. mono pressing of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys.
Original “stereo” copies of this 1966 album were in “Duophonic,” or “fake” stereo, as the album was originally mixed only for mono. The mono pressing was only in print through early 1968, making it much rarer than the stereo copies.
About this copy: This copy of Pet Sounds is a 1966 U.S. mono pressing on the Capitol label.
As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.
This copy was pressed at Capitol’s Scranton, Pennsylvania pressing plant, as indicated by the small number “3” on the back cover.
The wrap is largely intact; there is a 5″ (12 cm) opening at the mouth of the cover, as well as a 1″ (2 cm) split at the top center of the cover. The cover is starting to split there. There is a cutout punch hole in the upper left hand corner.
This wrap has no breathe holes; it may have been wrapped by Capitol or by the cutout distributor when the album went out of print.
We’ve secured the tears in the wrap with tape to prevent further tearing.
A nice copy of an album that’s quite hard to find as a 1960s mono pressing.
Background: Pet Sounds, released in 1966, is generally regarded as the best Beach Boys album, and one of the great rock albums of all time. While not a big seller when first released, the album has grown in reputation over the years and has never gone out of print.
Allmusic.com gave Pet Sounds 5 stars:
The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn’t have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group’s most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well).
