There’s not much to write about Pet Sounds that hasn’t already been written elsewhere.  While only a modest success at the time of the album’s 1966 release, Pet Sounds has gone on to become one of the most celebrated pop albums ever made. gave Pet Sounds a rare 5 star review:

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more….Massively influential upon its release (although it was a relatively low seller compared to their previous LPs), it immediately vaulted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit.

You can listen to “Caroline, No” here:

When originally released in 1966, Pet Sounds was issued in the U.S. and UK in both mono and “Duophonic” rechanneled stereo, as Brian Wilson generally mixed Beach Boys albums for mono.   In Japan, record companies had already stopped issuing albums in both mono and stereo by the time of the album’s original release, so all original Japanese issues of the album are in Duophonic rechanneled stereo (though the covers say “Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo.”

About this copy:  This copy of Pet Sounds is an original 1966 Japanese test pressing, pressed in “Everclean” red vinyl.  Japanese test pressings are far harder to come by than their U.S. counterparts.

The cover of this LP is VG++, with traces of wear at the corners and faint ring wear on the back cover.

The red vinyl test pressing disc has plain white labels with the catalog number stamped on one side.  The other side is blank.   The disc is VG++, with a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s very close to M- and doesn’t look like it’s been played more than a couple of times.

This LP does not include an obi or the lyric insert.

A beautiful copy of a classic album.
