Description

Offered for sale is an ultra-rare original Japanese red vinyl white label promotional copy of Music From Big Pink by The Band, complete with the rare original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Music From Big Pink is an original 1969 Japanese white label promo copy on the Capitol label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is VG++, with no general wear, but a bit of wear at the corners.

The nearly-always-missing obi is VG+, with a few wrinkles, but no tears.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

The foldout lyric insert is VG++, with a slight bit of foxing. The original “envelope” style inner sleeve is included.

The red vinyl disc is VG++, with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  There are no spindle marks on the labels, so the record may be unplayed.  A very clean disc!

A gorgeous copy of an ultra-rare copy of a classic LP and a very difficult LP to find complete.

Background: Released in 1968 (and in Japan in 1969), Music From Big Pink was the first LP by the Band, a group that had been recording together since 1961 as a backing band for Ronnie Hawkins and later, Bob Dylan.

The album only reached #30 on the U.S. album charts, and didn’t chart at all in the UK.

The album was released at least four different times in Japan, with each release having a different catalog number and obi.  Only the 1969 first issue was pressed on red vinyl.

It did, however, resonate with critics, who hailed the album as a masterpiece.

Allmusic.com gave Music From Big Pink a 5 star review:

None of the Band’s previous work gave much of a clue about how they would sound when they released their first album in July 1968. As it was, Music from Big Pink came as a surprise. At first blush, the group seemed to affect the sound of a loose jam session, alternating emphasis on different instruments, while the lead and harmony vocals passed back and forth as if the singers were making up their blend on the spot. … Over time, Music from Big Pink came to be regarded as a watershed work in the history of rock, one that introduced new tones and approaches to the constantly evolving genre.
