Description

Offered for sale is an original German pressing of Badfinger’s 1972 LP, Straight Up.

About this copy: This copy of Straight Up is an original 1971 German pressing.

We’ve heard U.S., UK, German and Japanese pressings of this LP and we think that the German pressing is the best-sounding version of this album.

The cover is VG+, with  slight wear at the corners and along the spine.  The cover has the original shrink wrap, though it’s broken at the spine..  There is a Jem Records sticker affixed to the cover.

The disc is M- and looks like it may have been played only once or twice.

A beautiful copy of a terrific record.

Background: If you look up “bad luck” in the dictionary, you might find a picture of Badfinger.  The power pop band showed a lot of promise, but due to bad management and a poor choice of record label, the Beatles’ Apple Records, the band suffered from poor promotion and theft of most of their profits, followed by having their catalog out of print for nearly 20 years due to legal problems with Apple.

Their third Apple album, Straight Up, is generally considered to be their finest effort, and it peaked at #31 on the album charts, helped by the singles “Day After Day” (#4) and “Baby Blue” (#14.)  The album soon went out of print when Apple shut down in 1975, and the album is rather scarce today.

Straight Up is also hard to find in good condition, as the dark cover was exceptionally prone to cover wear.

Allmusic.com gave Straight Up 4 1/2 stars:

Straight Up winds up somewhat less dynamic than No Dice, largely because that record alternated its rockers, pop tunes, and ballads. Here, everything is at a similar level, as the ballads are made grander and the rockers have their melodic side emphasized. Consequently, the record sounds more unified than No Dice, which had a bit of a split personality…This fine songwriting, combined with sharp performances and exquisite studio craft, make Straight Up one of the cornerstones of power-pop, a record that proved that it was possible to make classic guitar-pop after its golden era had passed.
