Offered for sale is an original 1965 Japanese pressing of the pop/bossa nova LP The Shadow of Your Smile by Astrud Gilberto.
About this copy: This copy of The Shadow of Your Smile is a 1965 Japanese pressing on the Verve label. It’s technically a second issue, as the cover indicates a ¥1800 price, where the original issue had a ¥1750 price.
Other than that, there are no other differences between the first and second issue.
The cover is VG+, with no wear, but the top and bottom of the back cover are a bit dirty. The lyric insert is intact, but has a bit of foxing. The obi is missing.
The disc is VG++, and very close to M-, with just a couple of faint scuffs. It’s a very clean LP that will play well.
A beautiful copy of a terrific bossa nova LP.
Background: Released in 1965, The Shadow of Your Smile was the second LP by Brazil’s Astrud Gilberto. The album peaked at #66 on the U.S. album charts.
For her second Verve LP, Astrud Gilberto expanded her range from a raft of Gilberto/Jobim standards to embrace the large and obviously daunting catalogue of classic American pop…. Certainly, no American vocalist could hope to equal the tortured syntax and somehow endearing performances on these songs; still, Verve did much better by Gilberto later on when they gave her good-time Brazilian songs to sing and didn’t attempt to force comparison with standard jazz/pop vocalists.
