Offered for sale is a white label promotional copy of Jamal at the Penthouse by Ahmad Jamal, pressed on multicolored vinyl.

About this copy: This copy of Jamal at the Penthouse is a mono white label promotional copy.  This particular copy was pressed on beautiful multicolored vinyl – red, blue, and yellow, with some green where the blue and yellow meet and some orange where the yellow and red meet.

The Chess/Checker/Argo labels frequently pressed promotional copies of their albums on multicolored vinyl in order to attract the attention of radio programmers.  This was often successful, but as a result, most of the copies of these colored vinyl beauties that survive today are in poor condition.

This copy of Jamal at the Penthouse is an exception, however.  The record appears to have been barely played.  Aside from a slight scuff or two from being removed from the original wax-paper sleeve (included) and a spindle mark or two on the label, it’s very close to M-.  It’s the cleanest example of one of these pressings we’ve ever seen.

The cover is VG, with general wear and two small (1/2″ or so) repaired splits near the mouth of the cover.

A beautiful example of a rare (and terrific) jazz LP.

Background: Released in 1959, Jamal at the Penthouse was Ahmad Jamal’s 10th album overall and his seventh for Argo.  For this recording, Jamal’s trio was backed by a 15 piece string section, and the album was recorded at the Penthouse jazz club in Seattle, Washington.

The album sold well for its time, reaching #32 on the Billboard charts.

Allmusic.com readers give Jamal at the Penthouse four stars:

This LP was a change of pace for pianist Ahmad Jamal, whose trio (with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier) is joined by a 15-piece string section arranged and conducted by Joe Kennedy. The interpretations are generally pretty, but with enough variety to hold one’s interest. Among the nine selections are Hoagy Carmichael’s “Ivy,” “Tangerine,” “Ahmad’s Blues” and “I Like to Recognize the Tune.”
