Offered for sale is a limited edition red vinyl pressing of Powerage by AC/DC, released in Canada in 1978.
About this copy: This copy of Powerage is a 1978 Canadian pressing, pressed on red vinyl.
The cover is VG++, with a couple of corner bends and pinholes in the two upper corners. The cover still has the original shrink wrap, a Jem Records import sticker and a hype sticker that says “LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL PRESSING.”
The red vinyl disc is M- and appears to have had little, if any play. There is a tiny bubble on the outside edge that will not affect play.
A nice copy of a terrific AC/DC LP and a record that has become quite hard to find in recent years.
Background: Powerage, released in 1978, was the fifth album by AC/DC, and the fourth to receive worldwide distribution. It was also their last album before becoming truly famous, as the follow-up to this LP was 1979’s Highway to Hell.
Powerage only reached #133 on the U.S. album charts, but it was eventually certified as platinum by the RIAA for sales of more than one million units.
In 1978, collectors were showing interest in colored vinyl records, and record companies around the world briefly offered then-new titles and older releases as limited edition colored vinyl pressings. Many of these were widely exported to the U.S., where they could be found in the “import” bins at larger record stores.
Among those titles was Powerage, which was issued in Canada as a limited edition pressing on red vinyl.
Powerage was a first in the sense that it debuted bassist Cliff Williams, but it really is more of a final curtain to the band’s early years. It would be the last produced by Vanda & Young, the legendary Australian production team who also helmed hits by the Easybeats, and it was the last before AC/DC became superstars. As such, it’s perhaps the most overlooked of their ’70s records, also because, frankly, it is the most uneven of them. Not that it’s a bad record — far from it, actually.
