Allman Brothers Band – The Allman Brothers Band 1975 Japan white label promo LP with obi

the allman brothers band japan promo lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese white label promotional copy of The Allman Brothers Band, the debut LP by the Allman Brothers Band, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Allman Brothers Band is a 1975 Japanese pressing on the Capricorn label of an LP that was originally released in 1969.

The cover is VG+, with slight foxing, but no wear.  The obi is VG+, with slight foxing.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The insert is VG++ with slight foxing.

The white label promo disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce (and very good) Allman Brothers Band LP.

Background: The Allman Brothers Band was the first studio LP from the group, released in November 1969.  The LP reached #188 on the U.S. albums charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Allman Brothers Band a 4 1/2 star review:

This might be the best debut album ever delivered by an American blues band, a bold, powerful, hard-edged, soulful essay in electric blues with a native Southern ambience. Some lingering elements of the psychedelic era then drawing to a close can be found in “Dreams,” along with the template for the group’s on-stage workouts with “Whipping Post,” and a solid cover of Muddy Waters’ “Trouble No More.” There isn’t a bad song here, and only the fact that the group did even better the next time out keeps this from getting the highest possible rating.

Carnival – The Carnival 1969 Japan red vinyl promotional Bossa Nova LP with obi

the carnival japan red vinyl promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese red vinyl white label promotional copy of The Carnival, the 1969 self-titled debut LP by the Carnival, including the original obi.

This LP has a slightly different track order than the U.S. version of the LP.

About this copy: This copy of The Carnival is an original 1969 Japanese pressing on the World Pacific label.

The cover is VG, with general wear on the back cover and moderate edge wear.  The obi is VG, with a couple of tiny tears.  It’s somewhat dirty, but otherwise in good shape.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The original white paper insert used for promotional copies is included; the plastic liner is missing.

This LP has no insert; we don’t know if it originally included one or not.

The red vinyl white label promotional disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific and underrated pop/bossa nova LP.  This is the only copy we’ve ever seen; this pressing is not listed at Discogs.

Background: In 1968, Sergio Mendes decided to revamp his Brasil ’66 group and in doing so let singer Janis Hansen and percussionist José Soares, along with bassist Tommy Neal and Terry Fischer, formerly of the Murmaids.

The band’s only LP was produced by Bones Howe, who was looking to create sort of a combination of the 5th Dimension and Brasil ’66.  Other instruments were provided by L.A.’s famed Wrecking crew.

The result was a terrific record that was purchased by absolutely no one.

Allmusic.com gave The Carnival a 4 star review:

The Carnival’s self-titled album from 1969 sounds quite a bit like the sunny blend of L.A. sunshine pop and easy Brazilian rhythms that Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 were dishing out at the time. …The group covers pop tunes almost exclusively, wrapping “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “Walk On By,” “Sweets for My Sweet,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and the Beatles’ “The Word” in their silky embrace, sounding like some of the classiest, most swinging elevator music you’d ever want to hear. The songs that aren’t pop hits of the day come off well also; the group-penned “Canto de Carnival” and the very bossa “Laia Ladaia” start the album off with a fizzy kick.

elton john - elton john red vinyl japan lp

About this copy: This copy of Elton John is a 1970 japanese pressing on the DJM label

The cover is VG++ with slight edge and corner wear.  The obi is VG+, with a crease in the middle and some minor foxing.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.  The insert is VG+ with minor foxing.   The original rice paper inner sleeve is included.

The red vinyl disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP that’s hard to find complete.

Background:  Elton John was Elton John’s second album, but his first to be released in the United States.  On the strength of “Take Me to the Pilot,” “Border Song,” and “Your Song,” the album reached #4 on the American charts and #5 in Britain.

In Japan, first pressings of the album were issued on red “Everclean” vinyl, which was created for the purpose of having lower static electricity and thus attracting less dust than regular black vinyl pressings.  Only the first issues were pressed on red vinyl; all later pressings were black.  Elton John is one of four titles that were released commercially in Japan on red vinyl.

Carpenters – The Singles 1980 Canada half speed mastered audiophile LP

carpenters the singles canada half speed mastered lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the limited edition half speed mastered Canadian audiophile pressing of The Singles 1969-1973 by the Carpenters.

About this copy:  This copy of The Singles 1969-1973 is a 1980 Canadian pressing on the A&M label.

While the release is technically a Canadian issue, the disc was pressed in Japan by JVC using the same proprietary “Supervinyl” compound that they used to press records for Mobile Fidelity.

The cover is VG++ with slight ring wear.  There is a bend in the upper left hand corner.

The disc is M- with a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs on side one.  There are no spindle marks on the labels; the record has likely been played just once or twice.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a great sounding record and one of the harder titles to find in the A&M Audiophile series.

Background: Released in 1973, The Singles:1969-1973 was the first compilation album by the Carpenters.

The album reached #1 on the U.S., UK and Canadian charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Singles:1969-1973 a 4 star review:

There’s a certain inherent sadness listening to this concise 12-song collection of the Carpenters’ early hits, especially as it opens with “We’ve Only Just Begun,” with its hopeful, dreamy lyrics — for it was never supposed to be definitive, just the first of at least two such collections. But changes in the public’s taste and a slackening (though never a disappearance) of hits for the duo, and Karen Carpenter’s death in 1983, made this the first and only real mass choice for a Carpenters collection. Ten of the duo’s dozen Top Ten hits are present, from “Close to You” to “Top of the World,” with their gorgeous and original slow ballad interpretation of “Ticket to Ride” and their cover of Carole King’s “It’s Going to Take Some Time” thrown in to offer a slightly wider perspective.

While Mobile Fidelity was getting most of the attention in the United States with their high-quality, half-speed mastered audiophile pressings, A&M Records in Canada was doing something similar in the early 1980s.

In fact, A&M’s pressings were half-speed mastered just as Mobile Fidelity’s were and the records were pressed in Japan by JVC using their proprietary “Super Vinyl” that no one has ever been able to duplicate.

While Mobile Fidelity released titles from artists on a variety of labels, A&M released titles only by their own artists, and the titles were released only in Canada (though they were widely exported to the U.S.)

While these A&M Audiophile titles are somewhat scarce, there are several titles in the series that represent what are, to date, the only audiophile pressings of those titles.  One of those is the Carpenters The Singles 1969-1973, which includes ten of the group’s 12 Top Ten hits and which sounds terrific.

Martin Denny – Exotic Moog 1969 U.S. electronic LP

martin denny excotic moog u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a copy of Martin Denny’s hard to find electronic instrumental LP, Exotic Moog.

About this copy: This copy of Exotic Moog is a 1969 U.S. pressing on the Liberty label.

The cover is VG+, with light edge wear.

The disc is M- with no marks on the labels or vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of an amusing and quite scarce instrumental LP.

Background: Martin Denny more or less created the popular exotica movement in the mid-1950s, combining his band of piano and vibes with exotic animal noises and bird calls.  Riding on the success of instrumental hits such as “Quiet Village,” Denny released a string of pleasant instrumental records throughout the 1950s and 1960s for Liberty Records.  Sales of many of these albums were helped by the cover art, which often featured model Sandy Warner.

Denny’s final album for Liberty was Exotic Moog, released in 1969.  This album was a departure for him, as he abandoned all conventional instrumentation for the then-new Moog synthesizer, reworking some older tunes, including “Quiet Village,” and adding in some tunes that were then currently popular.

The resulting album is interesting, unusual, and quite rare; it’s probably Denny’s most difficult album to find.

AllMusic.com gave Exotic Moog 4 1/2 stars:

Exotic Moog is the glittering grail for both Martin Denny collectors and Moog fans. There really is nothing else like it, and the LP is very much in short supply. The Moog in this case is one of the earliest synthesizers, which is more like a wondrously imaginative computer from a 1950s science fiction film than the more “realistic” synthesizers of today. Fortunately, the exceptional Exotic Moog ranks highly musically, almost on a par with the incredible work of Moog pioneer Jean Jacques Perry. Get this oddity if you can.

Ken Nordine – Flowering Conversations – Talking to Plants! 1970 U.S. spoken word LP

Flowering Conversations- Talking to Plants! u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the spoken word album Flowering Conversations- Talking to Plants!, narrated by Ken Nordine of “Word Jazz” fame.

This LP was intended to be played to your houseplants in order to encourage them to grow!  The album consists of two spoken-word tracks – “Good Morning,” and “Good Afternoon.”

While Nordine is uncredited on the LP, numerous sources have confirmed that he is the narrator on the album.

About this copy: This copy of Flowering Conversations- Talking to Plants! is an original 1970  U.S. pressing on the Greenleaf Productions label.

The cover is M- and is still in the original shrink wrap.

The disc is M- on side one and VG++ on side two, with a light inaudible scuff near the end of the side.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of an odd Ken Nordine LP that rarely turns up for sale.

Background: Ken Nordine (1920-2019) was a voiceover and recording artist whose career spanned some 70 years.

Nordine was a well-known recording artist, releasing more than a dozen albums under his own name over a span of fifty years.  The best known is probably 1957’s Word Jazz, where he told unusual stories while backed by Chico Hamilton’s Jazz group.

Nordine also did numerous commercials for radio and television and also narrated many industrial films and film strips.

One of the more unusual albums he recorded in his career was Flowering Conversations- Talking to Plants!, a 1970 LP that was intended to be sold or given away at nurseries.

This album was intended to be played at home for the benefit of your plants, as it was thought by some that talking to your plants might help them grow better.

As the album was sold via nurseries and gardening centers and not record stores, and as Nordine was not credited on the cover, the album did not sell particularly well and is now one of the harder of his albums to find.

Neil Young – Harvest limited edition 1978 Dutch peach colored vinyl LP

neil young harvest dutch cream colored lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition pressing of Neil Young’s Harvest, pressed on peach-colored vinyl and released in the Netherlands in 1978.

Note: This is an original 1978 issue and not the more recent issue that was pressed on white vinyl.

About this copy: This copy of Harvest is part of a limited edition series of colored vinyl albums released in the Netherlands in 1978, and is pressed on peach-colored (or cream-colored) vinyl that roughly matches the color of the album cover.

The cover is VG+ with slight ring wear on the back cover and a small corner bend.  The lyric insert is M-.

The colored vinyl disc is M- and looks like it’s only been played a couple of times.  Beautiful disc!

A beautiful copy of a classic album.

Background: In the late 1970s, record companies decided to issue a number of limited edition colored vinyl pressings of both then-new and older catalog titles in order to persuade collectors to buy additional copies of albums they already owned as collector’s items – at a premium price, of course.

Many of these titles were pressed in Europe and were widely exported to the United States, where they were easily found in record stores pretty much everywhere. The fad was short-lived, and by 1980, record companies largely went back to just pressing everything on black vinyl.

One of these titles was Harvest, Neil Young’s fourth album, originally released in 1971. Harvest was a massive success, reaching #1 on the American and UK album charts and being certified 4 times platinum, helped by the singles “Old Man” and “Heart of Gold,” which itself topped the singles chart.

Allmusic.com gave Harvest a 4 1/2 star review:

Neil Young’s most popular album, Harvest benefited from the delay in its release (it took 18 months to complete due to Young’s back injury), which whetted his audience’s appetite, the disintegration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (Young’s three erstwhile partners sang on the album, along with Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor), and most of all, a hit single. “Heart of Gold,” released a month before Harvest, was already in the Top 40 when the LP hit the stores, and it soon topped the charts.

Neil Young – Live at the Roman Colosseum 1976 U.S. red vinyl live LP

neil young live at the roman colosseum u.s. red vinyl lp

TheOffered for sale is a original red vinyl U.S. pressing of Neil Young Live at the Roman Colosseum by Neil Young.

The color of this disc is between orange and red; we’ve called it red, as that’s how it’s usually described.

About this copy: This copy of Neil Young Live at the Roman Colosseum is a 1976 U.S. pressing on the Spaceward label.

While the “STEMRA” printed on the label suggests a pressing from the Netherlands, this is actually a U.S. release.

The cover is VG+ with moderate ring wear on the back cover.

The red vinyl disc is M- on side one and VG++ and close to M- on side two with a light hairline through two tracks.  There are a few spindle marks on the labels.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Neil Young live LP.

Background:  The background on Neil Young Live at the Roman Colosseum is a bit murky; the album likely was not recorded at the Roman Colosseum, but we can’t find any information regarding where it was actually recorded.

It’s said to be a moderate quality audience recording of an excellent performance, with one side of acoustic material and one side of electric material.

The label, Spaceward Records, only released three titles between 1976-1978.

Tracks on Neil Young Live at the Roman Colosseum are:

  • Old Man
  • Maid
