Beatles – Rock ‘n’ Roll Music 1976 Japan 2 LP set with obi

beatles - rock 'n' roll music japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese copy of the double compilation album Rock ‘n’ Roll Music by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Rock ‘n’ Roll Music is a 1976 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label.  This album was released with different mixes in various countries; this version contains the same mixes as the original UK release.

The cover is VG+, with slight general wear and a couple of minor creases.  The obi is M-.

The booklet and poster are missing.

The two discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a scarce Beatles LP.

Background: Released in 1976, Rock ‘n’ Roll Music was a double compilation album containing more rock-oriented tracks by the Beatles.

The album reached #2 on the U.S. album chart and #11 on the UK chart.  The album was the first Beatles LP with worldwide release to contain “I’m Down,” a track originally released as the B-side to the “Help” single.

Allmusic.com gave Rock ‘n’ Roll Music a 3 1/2 star review:

On toward the mid-’70s, it dawned on the powers-that-were at Capitol/EMI that millions of listeners had come of age since the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 and, thus, had never experienced the group except in a historical context….And so the company decided to try a similar repackaging/re-marketing scheme with the Beatles. And the result was Rock & Roll Music, complete with an accompanying single release of “Got to Get You into My Life.” …Even focusing on their originals, the results were impressive, with the first LP appearance of the Paul McCartney-authored Little Richard homage “I’m Down,” originally a single B-side that had also been their concert closer on the 1965 tour; “Anytime at All”; and the delightful late-era “Birthday,” which was an opposite of sorts to the darker “Helter Skelter” from the same original album. … But Rock & Roll Music did work as a marketing concept, the album rising to number two on the U.S. charts (and kept out of the top spot only by — rather fittingly — Wings at the Speed of Sound).

Background: Released in 1975, Dressed to Kill was the third album by Kiss.

The album reached #32 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Dressed to Kill a 4 1/2 star review:

By the release of their third album, 1975’s Dressed to Kill, Kiss were fast becoming America’s top rock concert attraction, yet their record sales up to this point did not reflect their ticket sales. Casablanca label head Neil Bogart decided to take matters into his own hands, and produced the new record along with the band. The result is more vibrant sounding than its predecessor, 1974’s sludgefest Hotter Than Hell, and the songs have more of an obvious pop edge to them. …With Dressed to Kill’s Top 40 showing on the Billboard charts, the stage was now set for Kiss’ big commercial breakthrough with their next release.

Allmusic.com gave The Second a 4 1/2 star review:

The group’s second album was virtually a re-creation of its predecessor, only slightly more sophisticated in its range of songs and the manner of playing them, and the in-house writing had improved, though the latter also became highly derivative. Steppenwolf the Second embraces everything from hard rock to psychedelia to blues, and the band is in excellent form, playing very hard and edgy.

Background: Released in late 1979, Tusk was the twelfth studio album by Fleetwood Mac.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #4 in the U.S.

Allmusic. gave Tusk a 5 star review:

More than any other Fleetwood Mac album, Tusk is born of a particular time and place — it could only have been created in the aftermath of Rumours, which shattered sales records, which in turn gave the group a blank check for its next album. But if they were falling apart during the making of Rumours, they were officially broken and shattered during the making of Tusk, and that disconnect between bandmembers resulted in a sprawling, incoherent, and utterly brilliant 20-track double album. …As a piece of pop art, it’s peerless.

The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- with one spindle mark on the labels, and no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good album that’s hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in 1971, Carly Simon was the first solo album by Carly Simon, who had previously released three albums with her sister, Lucy as the Simon Sisters.

The album reached #30 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Carly Simon a 3 1/2 star review:

“That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be,” the leadoff track of Carly Simon’s first album and a Top Ten hit, in which the singer expresses reservations about getting married, benefited from a sense of role reversal — it’s such a guy sentiment, but sung by a woman in 1971, it came across as a feminist statement, consistent with the overall disillusionment so prevalent then. Nothing on the rest of the album was quite as pointed, though the other songs maintained the same ambivalence toward romance.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album chart and #2 on the UK chart.

Here’s what Allmusic.com had to say about Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy in their 5 star review:

Sitting atop the charts in 1975, Elton John and Bernie Taupin recalled their rise to power in Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, their first explicitly conceptual effort since Tumbleweed Connection. It’s no coincidence that it’s their best album since then, showcasing each at the peak of his power, as John crafts supple, elastic, versatile pop and Taupin’s inscrutable wordplay is evocative, even moving.

A nice copy of a scarce (and pretty good) Buddy Guy LP.

Background: Buddy and the Juniors is a 1970 LP by Buddy Guy, Junior Mance, and Junior Wells.

The album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave Buddy and the Juniors a 3 1/2 star review:

The all-acoustic Buddy & the Juniors was recorded on December 18 of 1969, and on December 19, they mixed this album and the Vanguard date! While an acoustic pairing between Guy and Wells is a natural one, adding jazz pianist Mance — a Chicago native whose early influences were the boogie-woogie recordings of Meade “Lux” Lewis and Albert Ammons — to the mix was risky in terms of interpersonal dynamics, but in retrospect, proved a brilliant idea. The proceedings are informal and raw with plenty of fireworks. … Given how earthy, informal, and joyful this acoustic session is, it conveys everything right about Chicago blues.

Peter Gabriel – So 1986 Japan LP with obi

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with a minor crease on the back cover.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ with a couple of light hairlines on each side.  It’s a fairly clean disc that has had relatively little play.

Background: Released in 1986, So was the fifth solo album by Peter Gabriel, and the first to have a proper title, though it didn’t have much of one.

The album reached #1 on the UK album chart and #2 on the U.S. chart.

Allmusic.com gave So a 4 1/2 star review:

Peter Gabriel introduced his fifth studio album, So, with “Sledgehammer,” an Otis Redding-inspired soul-pop raver that was easily his catchiest, happiest single to date. Needless to say, it was also his most accessible, and, in that sense it was a good introduction to So, the catchiest, happiest record he ever cut. “Sledgehammer” propelled the record toward blockbuster status, and Gabriel had enough songs with single potential to keep it there. …Even so, those songs are so strong, finding Gabriel in a newfound confidence and accessibility, that it’s hard not to be won over by them, even if So doesn’t develop the unity of its two predecessors.

The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The original custom inner sleeves are included (one red, one green).  The red one is M-.  The green one is VG+ with quite a bit of foxing, but no tears.

The two colored vinyl discs are M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a terrific Queen LP.

Background: Live Killers was released in March 1979 and was a success on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching #3 on the UK charts and #16 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Live Killers a 3 star review:

(Live Killers)… is an excellent document of Queen at the height of their ’70s arena rock powers. Including selections from their debut, 1973’s Queen, up until 1978’s Jazz, the album is a solid mix of early hits and forgotten album tracks, all given new life in the concert setting while the zealous crowd often sings along. A different, more up-tempo version of “We Will Rock You” opens the album, starting things off in grand style. Other hard rock highlights soon follow, such as “Keep Yourself Alive,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Now I’m Here,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Spread Your Wings,” “Brighton Rock” (complete with an outstanding Brian May guitar solo), and a medley that contains such tracks as “Killer Queen” and “Bicycle Race,” among others.
