Lesley Gore – Love Me By Name 1976 white label promo LP

Lesley Gore - Love Me By Name 1976 white label promo LP

Offered for sale is a white label promotional copy of Lesley Gore’s 1976 LP, Love Me by Name, on A&M Records.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a white label promo copy.  The cover is VG+, with very slight wear and a cleanly punched hole in one corner (all promo copies had this.)

There’s a partially torn promotional sticker on the cover and a bit of residue from a price sticker that has been removed.  The record is a beautiful VG++, with just a couple of sleeve scuffs.

There is glue residue on the labels.  The custom inner sleeve is included, but has a couple of split seams.

Background: After a four year layoff from the recording business, Lesley Gore returned to former producer Quincy Jones for her 1976 “comeback” LP, Love Me by Name. Despite terrific production and the help of the Brothers Johnson, the album sank without a trace, probably due to the fact that it really didn’t have an obvious hit single.

It’s a great-sounding record, though and all of the material was new at the time.  The record sold so poorly that most of the copies you see for sale are promotional issues; actual stock copies are quite rare.

Lesley Gore – Boys, Boys, Boys rare mono Armed Forces promo LP

Lesley Gore - Boys, Boys, Boys rare mono Armed Forces promo LP

Offered for sale is a rare 1964 promotional copy of Lesley Gore’s , third LP, Boys, Boys, Boys, prepared for the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service, complete with paper sleeve.

About this copy: This LP is in terrific condition; side one is M- and looks to be unplayed.  Side two is VG+ with a couple of small marks.  This album was originally issued without a cover but instead was sent out in a special AFRTS paper sleeve.  That sleeve is not included.

A very rare Lesley Gore rarity.  This comes from our personal collection.

Background: In the early 1960s, record companies occasionally made their titles available to the U.S. government for broadcast on military installations both domestically and abroad.  The record offered for sale is a copy of Lesley Gore’s third album, featuring “That’s the Way Boys Are,” and pressed for the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service.  This mono pressing contains all 12 tracks from the released album.

Lesley Gore – Boys, Boys, Boys sealed original mono LP

Lesley Gore - Boys, Boys, Boys sealed original mono LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed mono pressing of Lesley Gore’s 1964 LP, Boys, Boys, Boys.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a beautiful still sealed mono copy.  The wrap is fully intact and an original price sticker is attached.  This comes from our personal collection; we’ve had it since about 1987.

Background: Lesley Gore’s third album was titled after her alleged infatuation with boys.  Containing the hits, “I Don’t Want to Be a Loser” and “That’s the Way Boys Are”, the album sold only modestly and is somewhat scarce today.

Lesley Gore – Someplace Else Now rare original Japan LP

Lesley Gore - Someplace Else Now rare original Japan LP

Offered for sale is a rare Japanese pressing of Lesley Gore’s 1972 LP, Someplace Else Now, including the original lyric insert and a reproduction obi.

About this copy: The album offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of her 1972 LP, Someplace Else Now, recorded for the short-lived Motown subsidiary label called MoWest.  While the cover and (reproduction) obi say MoWest, the labels on the record actually say Tamla/Motown.

The disc is M-; it clearly has only been played once or twice.  The cover is VG+, with traces of wear and a 1″ split at the middle of the top cover.  The obi is a reproduction.

This is a particularly good pressing, by the way, and sounds terrific.

Background: While many of Lesley Gore’s 1960s LPs recorded for Mercury are fairly common, the two albums she recorded in the 1970s are particularly scarce.  While U.S. copies of those albums are hard to find, foreign pressings are particularly difficult.  In Japan, Lesley Gore was never particularly popular, and all of her records from that country are difficult to find today.

Lesley Gore – I’ll Cry if I Want to rare mono Armed Forces promo LP

Lesley Gore - I'll Cry if I Want to rare mono Armed Forces promo LP

Offered for sale is a rare 1963 promotional copy of Lesley Gore’s debut LP, I’ll Cry if I Want to, prepared for the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service, complete with paper sleeve.

About this copy: This LP was issued in a special paper sleeve, rather than a hard cover.  The record is VG+ with a couple of light marks and some scuffs from the heavy sleeve.  It clearly has been played only a couple of times.

Background: In the early 1960s, record companies occasionally made their titles available to the U.S. government for broadcast on military installations both domestically and abroad.  The record offered for sale is a copy of Lesley Gore’s first album, featuring “It’s My Party,” and pressed for the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service.  This mono pressing contains 11 of the 12 tracks from the released album, (“What Kind of Fool Am I” is not included) plus two tracks from The Page Boys (not the Texas garage band.)

Lesley Gore – Love Me By Name 1976 U.S. test pressing LP with cue sheet

Lesley Gore - Love Me By Name 1976 A&M LP test pressing with cue sheet

Offered for sale is an original U.S. test pressing of Lesley Gore’s 1976 LP, Love Me By Name, including a cue sheet.

About this copy: This copy of Love Me By Name is a 1976 U.S. pressing on the A&M label.

The plain white cover is VG+ with a 2″ split at the bottom.  Cue sheet is attached to the cover with cellophane tape.

The record is M-, and appears to have only been played once or twice.  Clean disc!

A great copy of a terrific Lesley Gore rarity.

Background: Released in 1976, Love Me By Name was the eighth album by Lesley Gore and the only album she recorded for A&M.

The album did not chart.   Produced by Quincy Jones and featuring the Brothers Johnson, the album sounded great but disappeared without a trace.

Allmusic.com gave Love Me By Name this review:

Lesley Gore and Quincy Jones reunite 11 years after their last of ten hit records with a who’s who of industry names and faces, many included in the group photo on the inner sleeve. The music is all grade-A, but given the collective star power here, this could (and should) have been a monster comeback album. Including the Brothers Johnson on “Sometimes” was smart, but the disco beat doesn’t have the charm of “I’ll Be Good to You” or “Strawberry Letter 23,” the Brothers’ own hits. …. Selling this at her shows would be a boon for those who follow Gore, but the intent of the album was to bring her back to the limelight, and Jones missed out here. A Jackson Five cover, say “Maybe Tomorrow,” “ABC,” or “I’ll Be There” the way Isaac Hayes beautifully tortured “Never Can Say Goodbye” — now that would have been something on an album too original for its own good.

About Us

Officially, “we” is Retro Marketing, formerly known as Retro Records. Unofficially, “we” is longtime record dealer, collector and sometime author Charlie Essmeier.
Charlie Essmeier

We have been selling records since 1978; our first ad appeared in issue #19 of Goldmine under the business name of Used Grooves. We had a record store in Houston, Texas for a while but eventually moved into doing record shows and mail order full time. In 1990, we moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and we ceased full time record sales in 1994, though we have been selling intermittently at record shows and on eBay over the years.

In 2013, Charlie decided to get back into the record business on a bigger scale and created Rarerecords.net.

Charlie has been a longtime occasional contributor to Goldmine and also contributed quite of bit of information to the 1994-1995 edition of Goldmine’s Price Guide to Collectible Record Albums. In 1996, Charlie published Rockin’ Gold: The World’s Most Valuable Records, a title which is now out of print.

Charlie is a longtime record collector, and his interests are varied, but these days he’s spending a lot of time listening to both Bossa Nova and Porcupine Tree, along with a smattering of pretty much everything in between. He also actively collects rarities by Lesley Gore and Julie London, and particularly enjoys tracking down vintage Japanese LPs pressed on red Everclean vinyl.

RareRecords.net was created to offer a variety of interesting rare records to the public, and to offer an outlet to those who are interested in buying records online but don’t want to do business on eBay. We hope to offer great products and terrific service.
